Atop TV Sets, a Power Drain That Runs Nonstop
By ELISABETH ROSENTHAL
Published: June 25, 2011

Those little boxes that usher cable signals and digital recording capacity into televisions have become the single largest electricity drain in many American homes, with some typical home entertainment configurations eating more power than a new refrigerator and even some central air-conditioning systems.

I will say that our Tivos use about half the energy of the three VIP622s they replaced - those things were little heat boxes. I didn't mind so much in the winter...but I turned one or two of them off when not in use during the summer because they put out so much heat (paying to operate them and also paying to cool the house). I would love to see these boxes become even more energy efficient.
