i am getting new dtv hd dvr service can i get external hard drive and get my content from dish network receiver and plug into dtv dvr?
Yes, you can get a EHD for the D* recvrs, you'll need a ESATA EHD ...
NO you cannot transfer shows from DISH to D* or any other D recvr for that matter.

What you can do is if there are shows you really want to keep then plug a DVD burner in to the outputs and record them.
However, you will have to do each show individually and in real time.

Or your TV if you have a DVD burner set up at your TV.
You'll also likely lose any format you had .... if it was HD, it won't be when your done, unless this has changed since I quit playing with my DVD burner....
