When I attach a Segate 1 g Flex drive it is not seen by the Hopper. Any suggestions? What is the best brand and model for compatibility?

Try plugging and unplugging the USB cord out of the Hopper a few times. It should see it after a few tries.
I've always had good luck with Western Digital My Book EHD's. Not so much with Seagate.
From what I can see, the GoFlex drives are USB powered. Dish specifies an AC powered drive. However, many have reported the Flex-type (portable) drives will work with a powered USB hub.
