If i bought a reciever with no card, is that useless? How would I get a card?

What model? Not all receivers have an external card.

If it is a receiver that requires a card...it is useless without one. Some of the newer receivers do not have cards though. What model?

You will need a smartcard for the 301. I think they are about $50 from Dish.

Before you buy a smart card check and see if there is a balance on that receiver. Call Dish and ask them to check the CA ID (R00?????) number. If there is a balance you would have to pay that off before activing receiver. It could also belong to Dish.

If it costs $50 to get a new smartcard, why not just buy a new receiver for about the same price?
