Actually, it appears to be VERY widespread. Much worse than I ever suspected. I realized this as I visited various so-called "FTA" sites looking for information about some of the specific receivers I've owned in the short time I've been in this hobby.
I've found dozens of "FTA" websites, with some of them having memberships in the six digits, dwarfing the membership here at satguys. Also, hasn't anyone noticed the sudden influx of new FTA'ers here a few weeks back? (As well as a recent drop in new posters?) That is because of the success of the E* and BEV anti-piracy efforts during that period, and the pirates recent success overcoming it. Plain and simple.
Another way to gauge which way the battle is going in the satellite piracy wars is to watch the prices of receivers on Ebay.
And I'm not even counting the stolen and counterfiet hacked cards and E/BEV hardware, which is probably what these Canadian pirates were selling, as it's not illegal to sell FTA receivers which are legitimate until modified.
BTW, when thinking of the term "Canadian pirates" does anybody picture a swashbuckling pirate in a flannel shirt , wool cap, and eyepatch going "Arrrrrrrrr, eh."
