So, FIOS is (as of yesterday) now available for installation in my condo complex in Signal Hill, CA! Woo hoo!

I planned to order the 20 / 5 internet service for $57 a month, but then saw that they had a package deal where I could get the 20 /5 internet and the Extreme HD package for $79.99 a month for 24 months. Of course, I'd also have to invest $15.99 a month for a DVR box or get a Tivo.

So I signed up for the moment for the $79.99 flex plan, and will try out the Verizon FIOS tv signal along-side my Dish Network setup to see how it compares picture quality wise. I have 15 days to decide if I like the tv service before I am locked into a 1 year contract with FIOS.

Cost wise, it looks like a pretty good deal for $38.99 more a month than just internet service to get both the extreme HD package and DVR box. Right now I have Dish HD Absolute and locals which costs me $41 a month including local channels costs and DVR fees.

Anyone have a comment about how good the standard def channels look with FIOS on a Plasma tv vs. the soft, compressed picture that my plasma shows when I watch standard def on Dish Network?

I can't compare with Dish but, I switched from cable where the SD quality was very poor. Most SD channels had a lot pixelation on my 720p TV. FIOS SD signal is far superior and I can't imagine you being disappointed with it.

I don't think SD channels will ever look spectacular on an HDTV, but I do agree with you. I came from DirecTV, and the SD channels are definitely better on FiOS.

One other thing to consider in the side-by-side comparisons - the number of channels. To the OP, with the bundle you're signing up for you get all their non-premium channels. There's alot there. If you want to see which you get, go here:

Put in your zip code. Then when the results come up, hit the Extreme HD Plan link.
