Anybody here in the local Detroit market, can you tell me if I get this with my package without having to but the sports pack?

Also do they have a seperate channel for their HD feed?

Your local sports network is always available as part of your basic package with DirecTV, Total Choice. If you live in Detroit then it would be FSN Detroit. You do not need the sports pack.

If you are in a zip code they have authorized for the HD feed you will find any HD games on channel 96 or 97. It is MPEG4 and comes with the MPEG4 HD locals for Detroit (which should be most of the Detroit market).

Because the majority of the programming, aka most taped programs 99%, is not in HD and simulcast/repeated on every other RSN, so why have in on 24/7 when you only need access to it when HD it actually being broadcast; exactly like the NFL Network.

I thought there was more to it than that. It would be on ESPNHD or in HD on a local chanel in HD and not broadcast on 95. I was thinking there was some kind of contract issue.

Sometime it can be a contract or rights/carriage issue, but I was just commenting on why there is really no need for a 24/7 HD RSN channel when the vast majority of their programming is SD and/or repeated simulcasts.

Are you asking why some HD produced games aren't shown? If so, that is likely contractual and carriage rights issues. Remember some teams are actually owned, or partially owned by cable companies that compete with DBS.

one more question guy's if you can help. Im confused on what is what as far local HD channels. Like wxyz there are like 4 of them listed. the guy told me only 2 worked, and one is HD, but I dont know which one. I know the local news here on 7 is broadcast in HD and it isn't coming through on the 7DT channel in hd, the other channel he said I had ( just 7) is not coming through period..

When the news in HD is on and not HD via DirecTV MPEG4, are you still able to get it HD via your OTA channel?

Something like:

DL7 is the DirecTV SD

7 WXYZ is the DirecTV MPEG4 (HD programming when available will be here)

7-1 is the WXYZ OTA (HD programming when available will be here)

7-2, 7-3, etc are all OTA sub-channels.

Zap2It is owned by Tribune which is the same place our DirecTV EPG comes from I think.

Ok so the number with no letters are the HD programing channels?

I do not get OTA, I just went Directly with the box, that is problably why he told me I dont get any of those other ones..

Now i know for a fact they broadcast these news casts here in HD on 4 and 7, and those channels are completly black. Nothing..

May just have to call them. I was watching them on my E* dish the other day in HD, they were bragging about it. Maybe its the moring shows, I dont know..Errr!!!!

FYI, None of the Detroit Sports teams are owned by any cable companies.

All the FSN HD stuff is on 96. You have to be careful because the guide lists games as 7pm-1:30am, then on gameday it changes to 7pm-10pm or so. That cancels any set recordings. So for the HD feed, you have to setup recordings day of, or late day before. It simply sucks...

Jimbos, did you ever get your situation squared away to get channel 96? I know we activated around the same time and both had trouble at first? Since I resolved an address problem I've been running solid.

No I have not, I also have not been able to get a phone number for FSN Detroit so I can call and plead my case. I am pretty sure it is a FSN - Red Wings issue as far as how far the signal goes and the zip code assignments goes. I get the signal fine, but am in the wrong state (zip) being 500 ft on the wrong side of the state line causes me to not be eligable.

Someone mentioned to call D* and ask them to speak to FSN about a wavier, but I don't know if that type of thing is possible, (like the networks) any thoughts ???
I thought I would contact FSN and see what they think and recommend, otherwise, I may just drop it and HOPE that they expand the areas next year.

I think as far as FSN is concerned you are eligible for the signal. If you get it in SD, you can get it in HD as far as they are concerned.

D* simply is only giving it to certain zip's based on the spotbeam estimates - which are conserative to say the least. Only solution that would probally work is the infamous "move".

There is no waiver process for RSNs. The teams do deceide what market they serve as a home market, but that has nothing to do with the SD vs HD feed.

I have spoke with the local Fox station here and they say they have nothing to do with the FSN side of the business and did not have any numbers either.

How would you go about contacting the correct deptments for these issues.

I would be glad to call them, if their numbers were accessable and I knew who to direct my sitiation to.

btw, I pay the 12 p/m for the Sports Pack and can get the SD version fine, no problems at all, except it's SD
I do not live close enough to get the Detroit locals via Sat, but I do get them with my OTA antenna.

Likely its the league offices, not the teams directly; unless the league tells you otherwise. What was your OH zip again? I am still a firm believer that the leagues maintain slightly tighter areas for HD versus SD; I am waiting for them to prove me wrong.

Looks like there was some confusion about 95, 96 and so forth. Here's the deal.

Channel 95 HD has been around for a couple years now and is the "Special Events" channel. DirecTV picks and chooses games from various sports packages and stations to put there. Think of it as a "Best of" channel. So a couple nights ago it had the Versus NHL game on. Tonight it's scheduled to have the Red Wings game off FSN Detroit and the Pistons game off FSN West (most likely since it's at the Lakers).

Now what this means tonight is those with FSN Detroit as their local RSN will get the game on 95, blacked out for everyone else except those with Center Ice, assuming the Center Ice feed uses FSN Detroit.
The Pistons game, if it uses the FSN West feed will be blacked out to everyone except those with FSN West as their local FSN. Those with NBA Leauge Pass will also get it, again assuming it's using the FSN West feed.

95 is MPEG2 and available to all customers.

Channel 96 or 97 are different. DirecTV has been making FSN and other sports channels direct HD feeds available in MPEG4 on the new sats and you need a 5 LNB dish and an MPEG4 receiver like the H20 or HR20 to get the games.
There are a couple of these that are full time but for now the vast majority are only lit up when a game is actually in HD. BUT it is sent down via spotbeam with the HD locals in most markets.
So the FSN Detroit HD feed will be there tonight on 96 but only in the Detroit market. The rest of Michigan will not get it.
