Someone is being sent there in December. Does anyone have any fairly recent experience with satellite in that area? What satellites can be received, free English language channels, pay satellite options, etc.? Thank you.

Here to chime in..... Depending where you are at. If your on a super Fob like andaconda, there is an Over the air system setup where you can use your over the air tv to get AFN channels like AFN sports, AFN Spectrum, ect.

If your not on a super fob and on a small LSA, you can get AFN via Hotbird and a powervu reciver wich can be picked up at the px or from someone leaving. Usally they get handed down. There are some MBC channels that are in english like MBC4, and MBC6 that shows programming from the states with arabic subtitles. They show stuff like 2 half men, and operah, ect. Those can be had on Tirksat. Any other bird up there has nothing but arabic on it. There are a couple of channel suites that has stuff like nick, cartoon network, fox news, animal planet, ect. Those requre smart cards and come off of both hotbird and Tirksat. Aquireing smartcards for those are hard to do once your in iraq. IF your in kuwate or quatar for any time, and can get off post, then you can go visit a satellite shop and get the smartcards and reciver nessasary for those channels.

Dont bother try gettting any channels from Sky Europe or any other european provider as the signal doesnt reach iraq, unless your in the extreme northern part near turkey. Then you may have a shot as the beam overlaps a part of iraq up there. Anything south of Kirkuk forget about it.

Thats your options, as there is not alot. If you decide to go with a fta system just to see whats up there, you will find some porn on Hotbird that is softcore from Italy, but it often loops and gets boring after the first week. That pritty much sums it all up :) Stay safe and if you need some moral boxes pm me with you APO AE and I'll see what I can do. From one vet to another and one former soilder who has 2 combat tours in the very same spot you have. Stay safe and we will see you when you COME HOME! Safe! Let us know if there is anything we can do to help make your deployment and transition better :)

For FTA you would be best going for nilesat 7'w or arabsat badr 26'east both satellites have mbc 2 & 4 and mbc action other channels like mtv Arabia and nickelodeon are in english and dubai one all fta also which is 99% english and has usa shows for pay tv you would be best going for orbit from eurobird 25.5 east or showtime Arabia package from 7'w

I live in the UK myself and i can receive nilesat and and arabsat here and have the english fta channels and also have subscriptions to orbit and showtime as the have alot of USA tv shows and lots for usa sports in english, So if you have any questions just ask,

Here is just a small English fta channels web links you can get from nilesat and arabsat-badr

Any suggestions for equipment I can order and birds i can hit from Mosul? I would like to have a motorized dish so I can get more than one bird.

goaliebob99,

Have you visited any satellite shops in Iraq? How readily available are the dishes, LNBFs, or receivers?

Would you recommend Americans buy dishes from the local market over there?

I would like to put a package together that would fit the need there. If offset 80cm or 90cm dishes are available, then that would reduce the shipping cost.

Could you not contact a px supplier and see what they pay as I thought it was free.Free as in you shipped to the local depot and they do the moving to supply bases.
