...but Tiger Woods is tied for 88th after Thursday's round and may not make the cut after hitting two tee shots in the water and posting a 74. Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson is 3-under par and tied for 9th. One thing is for sure...Tiger does not appear mentally at the top of his game.

"Quail Hollow – where Tiger's very attendance is credited for a surge in spectator-ticket sales of 30,000 – is Woods's second tournament back from his self-imposed break to deal with personal issues and his first regular PGA Tour event after his return at the Masters earlier this month."

This is the sports business problem with hypeing a single player. Eventually Woods is going to diminish. You cannot outrun the calendar.

And that will leave golf exactly where?

He is just rusty. As his schedule changes to add tournaments...so will his game.
He is beyond Rusty...he is mentally "not there" and his swing looks absolutely terrible. Heck, he finished yesterday's round at +9 and missed only the sixth cut in his professional career. IMO, Woods needs to step-away and get his head screwed on straight before he can complete on the PGA Tour. Of course, with a pending divorce, continued media attention, and his vow not to bend, fold, spindle, mutilate or choke any more whores...this may prove difficult.

Regardless, the television ratings will continue to suffer...but fans sure are jumping on the Phil Mickelson bandwagon.

Roby McIlroy fires course to win at Quail Hollow

Rory McIlroy fired a court record 10-under par and becomes the youngest player since Tiger Woods (1996) to win o the PGA Tour. McIlroy is 2-days shy of his 21st birthday. McIlroy was paired with 24-year old Anthony Kim who finished tied for 7th place. Phil Mickelson managed to finish in sole possession of 2nd place, but 4-shots away from McIlroy. Today's round was absolutely brilliant. Anyway, lots of good young talent coming into their own.

I worked the Quail Hollow Championship on Thurs and Sunday.
I can tell you this. There was no apparent drop off in attendance over the weekend. I was a spectator on Saturday as well. The place was packed.
Tiger defintely moves the needle on the ratings meter. But those are casual golf fans.
Dedicated golf watchers don't care if Tiger is there or not.
I don't.
We can...Golf can, get along just fine without Tiger on the leaderboard or around for the weekend.
We realize the game is indeed bigger than Tiger.
