It seems that using the HDMI cable on the hd-dvr unit disables all digital audio outputs! Can this be right - is there a workaround?

HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

Please specify which unit you have.

yes, but this goes from the cable box to the stereo tv - how would I get the digital audio to the home theater reciever if there is no digital audio out on the tv and the digital audio out on the cable box is disabled by the HDMI? Instructions say there should be a choice in the menus to re-enable the digital out on the cable box, but the menu option doesn't appear as described. I'll get back to you with the model # - its actually my brothers so I'll have to find out.
