HDNet Movies joins the HD-Lite crowd??

I find that given enough movie channels, that I can usually find one to watch at just about anytime I feel like watching a movie.

Whereas with a service like Netflix, I have to know days in advance what I want to watch, and would only have 2 or 3 choices available at any one time. And perhaps no choices for the next 2-3 days right after watching two.

I can see how it would work great for some people, but I'm not organized enough to make it work for me. I might order two movies and then keep them for 6-8 weeks before feeling like watching them.

I do exactly the same thing. :D :D
I'll order some movies that I'm jacked up about, and then they sit for weeks. I have 3 right now that I've had for way over a month, they actually get in my way on the coffee table. I've even returned movies that I've never watched because I've lost interest.

Dish, OTOH, I can always find something I'm interested in watching, probably should just drop Netflix until there is a substantial library of HD-DVDs to choose from.

Speaking of HD-DVD, I've put off watching King Kong waiting for the HD-DVD release, it was on the HD-DVD demo disc for cripes sakes, yet there's still no HD-DVD release date...

That is why I have no interest in NEtflix or Blockbuster. Now if Netflix decides to do the receiver that downloads movies to the hard drive ,which I heard that they are going to do , they might have more a chance with me. Then again if Dish would do a deal with Netflix to do their movies via internet through the existing 622 dvrs we could all be happy.

I just watched a long commercial on HDNMV about their upcoming movies. Advertised several classic movies. They stated that the movies would be shown commercial-free, in their original aspect ratio, and at the highest standard of HD. That they are to be 'as movies were meant to be shown.'

Let's hope that when the NFL free preview goes away that this will be true for E* subs.

I think the HD-lite subject is what pissed of Cuban the last time he was on this site. He didn't want to talk about it.

BWHAHAHAHA, if what Dish is doing is OK for a guy like Mark Cuban, it's more than good enough for the guys on this forum.

Cuban MAKES money on the deal. We're PAYING money for a degraded product.

What does Mark Cuban's HDNet have in common with the band Metallica?

...they both sold out by providing a Lite version of their former product; they are now a pale comparison of what made them so popular with their fans.:(

With HD going mainstream, Cuban realizes he will no longer be able to demand a premium for his HDNet channels since customers will have a hundred or more HD channels to choose from in the next year or two. It's a "sell out" that will labeled as "investigating strategic business opportunities."

Will people continue to watch the HDNets? Sure! Many people still don't know the difference between HD and SD, and even more people simply don't care. These are the people Cuban is mass marketing. And they are the same people who will defend HDNet-Lite because they think, "it looks fine to me." After all, they spent a couple grand on their RCA CRAP2000 HD set and all HD channels look great! As Jesus of Nazareth once said, "forgive them, for they know not what they do.":p

From a business perspective I can't blame Cuban or E*. But I will say that M. Cuban's actions regarding HD-Lite are disingenuous, as best, and E* is perpetrating a fraud by selling their product as HD. HD-Lite is the product and practice of Cheese Dicks!:down

What a ridiculous comment. As long as Cuban gets paid, and doesn't have to watch HD-lite himself, then why should he care?

I doubt the owners of other HD channels don't care a lot either, as long as they are getting paid.

Besides Cuban's answer is elitist. What kind of answer is 'go and buy very expensive gear if you want true HD?' That's the answer of a guy to whom $10K-$20K doesn't mean anything. It's a very arrogant response to someone who might have saved up $1500-$2000 to get a true-HD TV and now gets a flippant response that he had better get used to seeing HD-lite.

Just because you are happy with sub-HD picture quality doesn't mean we should be. Some of us have paid a lot of money to get a high quality HDTV set, but now are being served a product that is visually inferior. And we can easily see the difference.

Maybe you love McNuggets too, but some of us might like our food to be of higher quality.

Couldn't have said it better myself...

Indeed, ever since I read that statement way back when, I've though it was a very arrogant and obnoxious remark. Essentially, what Cuban is saying, is that he simply doesn't give a sh*t, become a billionaire if you want HD, end of story. What an a$$hole...

A minimal response from Echostar

Over at AVS it's been posted that HDNet Movies has been down-rezzed to 1440x1080i and bistarved down to 13mbps fro 18mbps. Apparently this happened when Dish added the NFL Network preview channel? Can any of you experts verify this?

E* goes HD-Lite on HDNet Movies for NFL-HD Preview - AVS Forum

Sheldon,

So I looked into the issue to get some information for you and this is what I found out. The transponder that HD Net comes off of is also shared by HD Movies and NFL HD. NFL HD was just recently added to this transponder which did affect the bit rate of the services that were there previously. This service has been monitored and it has been determined that the picture quality was affected minimally and still meets the standards governed by ATSC. There are no plans, right now, to remove NFL HD from that transponder. I have had HD Net running in our Demo room since our phone conversation yesterday and have not seen any discrepancies in the picture. If you are having problems with your picture here are some things I would like you to look at:

How is the receiver connected to the TV?

Is the problem on all channels, all HD channels, or just HD Net?

How big is the TV?

If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to contact me, I hope this was helpful or at least informative.

Now that was a disheartening response.

A person from Technical Operations cannot see a different between full rez 1920x1080 at 18Mbps vs 1440x1080 at 13Mbps.

No wonder HD-lite is showing up on more and more channels.

So has anyone seen content played back on a D5 like Mr. Cuban suggest?

Yes, D5 has a much higher bitrate - well over ATSC's 19.2Mbps...however, he cannot sell us copies of the HDNET movies that we want to see in non-HDLITE - nor if he could, could he sell it for anything close to the price we pay for HDNET.

Even as that is said, you think has D5 of all the movies at his house, possibily in excess of the 17.57Mbps Video his channel is capable of - so he doesn't have to endure that "low bitrate".

Again, he will absolutely sell this channel when he can make a bundle - just as he did with broadcast.com.

Too bad he didn't continue until the end to make it known for striving to acheive perfection - but clearly the want of subs even at lower quality to make the channel more valuable for that eventual sale won out.
