HDTV vs DVD

Since DVD's aren't HD, What do the broadcasters use to provide HD movies? Do they use the movie reels (original film) or what? If they use a movie source that isn't HD, then aren't we just getting a lesser quality movie that is simply being broadcast in HD?
 
Lol, this thread is titled wrong, I was gonna laugh if it was about compairing HD pg to DVDs.

But movies that are converted to HD are from the film source which has a higher resolution than HD. and then that is put on an HD medium, be it tape or HD etc like charper said
