Im am fairly new to this direct tv thing. I have a d-12 300 receiver and was wandering what dishes are compatable with it. I want to leave my receiver at my camp but have no idea how to even begin. How do i change the settings on the receiver for hookup ?

Welcome to SatelliteGuys! Look for a Phase III dish, it should work fine for your use, in the setup menu the receiver should give you the option to set your dish.

If your D12 is connected to an SWM dish at home, you need to do the following:
Connect the D12 to the new dish (which I assume will not be SWM).
Go to satellite setup
Change the switch type to "multiswitch".
Now the dish selections for non-SWM dishes will appear and you can select the right one.

I have a dish network dish from my old RV (it came with the "RV from hell") will that dish work with my Direct TV Receiver?
No, not without making changes to the dish itself, much easier to find a D* dish that will work than try to reconfigure one.

That's what I thought. Thanks I guess I did alright by getting the RV set up from Direct Sat. although their customer service really sucks big time.
