Hopper Self Install?

I have always owned my own equipment (722K) and installed it myself. Am I allowed to do this with the Hopper and Joey line? When it was first introduced I read that the answer was no. Has that changed?

Only if you buy all your own equipment.

Hoppers are not wired like ViPs. Very different components.

I did my own Hopper 1 install as well as the hopper 2 install and the hopper3 install too. As long as you know how to do it and have the wiring diagram and proper switch ,you should be able to have it in place and ready to activate before you call DISH. Make sure that you tell them you want to activate a new Hopper 3 that you OWN . Other wise you will get hit with all kinds upgrade questions.

OK Thanks! I didn't know if things had changed. I've been happy with my two 722K's but I don't have the OTA modules (would need two) and I'd like to save the $10 OTA fee. It doesn't make sense to spend the money on old equipment that appears to be at end-of-life.

As an early adopter of a Hopper in an RV, I did all the wiring changes needed before the Dish installer arrived. He was mandatory but all he had to do was install the Solo, the Hopper, and the Joeys. Not a battle worth fighting.

That's because of the lnb swap and the change from node to hub. If it was plug and play with the current setup they would allow self install.

Of course I self install moving the Hopper 3 and Joeys from the trailer to the motorhome. But Dish doesn't have to know that.

They tried pulling that on me as well, said it was mandatory. I told them no way, I own all of my equipment and I always do my own installs. They activated it and I was watching TV, in standard definition only. The hiccup was a Mr Dish tech support guy told me the wrong orbitals to aim my Hopper 3 dish to. I re-aimed the dish the next day and all is well.

I suggest to the OP... Be firm and stick to your position, they will give in if you don't let them push you around.

I replaced my leased and dying Vip622 with a Hopper 3 and Hybrid Western Arc LNB that I purchased from Dish Depot. They were very helpful in getting the right stuff to do the swap. Once installed, I called Dish to activate the Hopper 3 and remove the ViP 622 from my account. Dish was also very helpful. I was up and running in a few minutes, while the Dish rep volunteered to stay on the line to be sure everything was OK.

I did the Same thing . Works well if you are prepared and installed ,before you call in to authorize your receiver.

I'm currently on the western arc and live in the Detroit suburbs. Is Detroit going to move to eastern arc only? Since I have to purchase a new LNB, I figure I might as well switch arcs while I'm at it.

It's hard to say. Fortunately where I live in the Peoria Illinois market we can go either way for high DEF locals. That comes in real handy when it comes to LOS issues. In some markets they drop the western arc locals and in the Champaign area it's only western arc for hi DEF locals. With Detroit being such a major market, I personally cannot see them going exclusively to the east
