Houston Astros on hot water over illegally stealing signs

Meh. (No disclaimer needed, lifelong Cincinnati fan). If you ain’t cheating you ain’t trying. Stealing signs is as old as signs. Solution to somebody stealing your signs? Change your signs. Same as the solution to the shift, which is become a complete ball player who can hit to all fields.

What should happen? Houston should get a stern note. What will happen? They will probably lose a few draft picks.

Nothing to see, move on.

A base runner stealing signs is not a big deal. Happens all the time. Using technology to steal signs is a big deal and MLB should come down hard for that.

How were they using technology to steal signs?

“Technology” is a loaded word. The Astros had a video camera in center field. Some bench warmers watched the video and then banged a trash can, once for a fast ball, twice for a curve.

Of course the Giants stole signs with a Telescope in 1951. It that “technology”? The Red Sox had a guy in the stands sending sign information on his iPhone in 2017. Technology? The Phillies used binoculars in 1897? Technology? It is said that the Phillies had a board in the coach’s box which went up and down like a telegraph, and the coach then gave a signal to the batter. In 1900. Technology?

The modern video camera was invented in 1959. Earlier products that do the same thing existed for decades before that. Technology?

Nothing to see here. Move on.

WOW, thanks SamCdbs

So, why is it that Hu Darvish got LIT up in the Astros park and then got Lit up in the same playoff games at HOME ....

I highly doubt the Astros had this set up on the road.

Also, you ever think about how QUICKLY all that had to happen in order for it to even come close to working ?

Really? Probably because it was opposing pitchers that were affected, when the Astros were up to bat? Wow...

Your reading that info wrong ...
The point is the Astros Beat Darvish while on the road just as bad ....

Do you really think they had the same set up in the opposing stadium ?

Do you really think teams are stupid enough to not change signals often ?

Sometimes they get changed every batter.

Btw, is it illegal to have TVs in the locker room ?

Using electronics, looks like they looked at a TV and used a bat and a garbage can ... hardley high tech.
A closed circuit video setup installed for the sole reason of stealing signs clearly constitutes using technology. Maybe they should have been smarter on how they communicated the results....
