I have been reading a lot about Satellite tv and still trying to decide whether to switch to it... One big question that I can't seem to find a definitive answer for is if you live in an area where D* says you get local stations (San Francisco Bay Area) what does that mean antenna wise??? Do those local stations come down on the satellite beam(s), meaning are they first transmitted from a ground station to the satellites and then received by the triple LNB antenna on your house??? And is it for local stations, HD or what that you need (or want) the triple LNB antenna in the first place??? Just trying to get beyond some confusion here... Any help would be appreciated... diitto....

Standard Def. Locals are transmitted up to a satellite and then beamed down to your dish.
The only time you would need to deal with a antenna is if you want to receive Over the Air local TV programing in High Def.

The tripple LNB dish is used for receiving HD stations such as Universal HD, ESPN HD, Etc.

If HD is not a concern then you could get by with dual LNB Dish.

A Tripple LNB Antenaa will also be needed if you wish to receive International programming ( Special Programming in other languages other than English) or the Spanish Programming Package (DirecTV Para Todos).

That is correct under the current D* setup, for standard broadcasts.

You can receive the SF locals with a single lnb. They are on the 101 satellite along with all of the D* standard programing. Some locals are on other satellites but your are on 101.

As for HD locals broadcasts you would currently need an antenna outside or in your attic, to get them. D* will be launching HD locals soon, but currently only have them for NY & LA. There are conditions that others can get them, but if you are close to SF you probably won't qualify. As far as D* national HD channels, you will need a 3 lnb antenna, to receive them.
