I'm just curious; I'm sure that space is limited, but limited to how many channels?

*Also, how many channels can be added to other sats'??

Thanks

Count the number of video channels in each transponder. Usually they consider a TP full when it has 12 video channels and nothing else.

If you find some transponders that have less than 12 video channels than there might be some room.

Good luck :)

32 transponders 3 lit up with mirrors, otherwise all available.

Hope that helps :)

THERE IS PLENTY OF ROOM ON 61.5 & 148

According to the above list, there is plenty of space available on 61.5 to add the remaining 11 HD channels. Also, it seems that there is plenty of space on 148 to add ALL VOOM HD channels. I roughly counted transponders with space for 4 SD which is equivalent to 1 HD channel.

GET ON WITH IT DISH ! MIRROR THOSE VOOM HD TO 148 !!!

Actually I see room for 20 more SD channels at 110° or 3 HD and 8 SD. This is tops! TP 19 at 110° is empty accexcept for a data "home" application. This is where 12 of the 20 SD channels could go or up to 3 HD channels. Remember that at this point Dish cannot mix HD and SD channels on the same transponder due to their current encoding scheme.

See ya
Tony

And of course the numbers will change over the next year(s) with MPEG 4. The satellite will amp and reflect back MPEG 2 or 4 or whatever plus the new satellites going up. But when will the uplinks & receiver conversation allow the complete switch over to MPEG 4 is an other question.

Perhaps Dish is holding back on certain transponders so they can be used for MPEG 4 in fall '05 or after. Some deal will likely be offered for upgrading receivers to MPEG 4. but using existing sat locations saves the expense of repositioning Dishes. If this is the case the unused transponder space will be held back. I do not know, it's just a guess on my part.

They can put a lot more channels on 119/110 if they want to upgrade all the receivers. Dish is finally decided that upgrading all the receivers is going to be done. When they finally get all the receivers changed they will be able to do 2 things:

1. Change all transmissions to 8PSK (from QPSK or 4PSK) this will give them 30-40+% more space

2. Change the content from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4. This could cut the space used by HD and STD by about a third. People like to quote a 1/2 space savings, but in reality most HD MPEG-2 is running at 12MBit/sec or less on average (down below 19.2) as the encoders have gotten better, the rate continues to drop some on MPEG-2. HD MPEG-4 will probably start around 8MBit/sec and work down to 5-6 as the encoder get better.

So, lets say 10 standard definition channels look good now on a TP, in the future 8PSK will raise that to 14, then MPEG-4 probably will raise it to 21-22/TP.

It should be note that at 105 W, there will be only 24 Ku band TPs even when AMC-15 is moved there later this month but the Ku band frequency range is the same as Echostar-9 at 121 W with its 32 TPs. The low power of AMC-2 at 105 W requires Dish to use large error correction which limits the number of SD channels/TP to 12. With the much higher powered AMC-15 at 105 W, Dish should be able to do up to 16 SD channels/TP. Based on the post by TNGTony, this should allow Dish to add 120+ SD channels to 105 W with AMC-15. I would expect Dish to use AMC-15 at 105 W for more local markets based on some of the information from the Team Summit.
