HWS vs. Hopper 3

Instill have a HWS. I have had it since my last reroofing forced me to disconnect my old dish and the appt for a reinstall made it easy to decide to upgrade to that technology. As luck would have it the Hopper 3vwas announced shortly after that appointment.

My HWS is randomly rebooting. My first question is whether this is potentially a sign of an approaching total failure.

Next, if it is likely should i consider an upgrade to a Hopper 3? If I do what changes will have to yake place to my current stup? What changes/ improvements will insee? Are there any negatives associated with this upgrade?


Sorry to be asking for help. I have not been particularly active or helpful hete of late. In fact my helpfulness when I was active is open to question. Still I am hoping btonlearn from responses.

Hey my friend! So, if your HWS is on its way out this is what would have happen to convert you to a Hopper 3: If your LNB is not already a hybrid it would need to be changed out. Or, a hybrid 42 switch could be placed instead. Next, your node would need to be changed to a hybrid hub. The rest is pretty simple. I say just do it! You will not be disappointed.

You will gain 16 satellite tuners with the Hopper 3, which is way more than the hopper with sling (3) so that is a plus and no conflicts anymore.

I switched from a HWS to an H3 about 6 months ago and I love it. I was always getting warnings when setting up a recording that one show or the other would be clipped due to recording overlaps. Never a problem anymore.

Do you have an OTA adapter attached? If so leaving the OTA adapter on a weak channel has been known to cause reboots.

I do have one installed. I will have to keep track of whether the reboots are tied to being tuned to such a station.

IF you have a channel that gets less than 70% strength on the meter, you can lose the channel at times and it will put up the screen to change to another channel. I have certain channels like this in my area and I can't keep it on my sat receiver without it dropping out, but over my tv tuner or TABLO or Sling tv ota device, I don't have any problems with receiving them or recording them and they don't drop out. So I think it is built into the receiver to put up the message as soon as it becomes less than 70%. It will even tell you in the DISH ota menu where you can scan and add channels that certain ota channels are weak and may drop out and do you want to keep them.

Well my HWS died an unceremonious death this morning while my wife was watching Good Morning America.

A technician will be here Thursday to install a Hopper 3.

You will not be disappointed, the H3 is head and shoulders above the HWS.

Installed. I do not seem to be able to restore my old timers but other than that no issues so far.

Did you unpair the remote from the HWS ? If not
To Manually Unpair 40.0 Remote Control
1. Press and hold the SAT mode button until all mode buttons light up
2. Press and hold RECALL and 0 at the same time for 3 seconds
3. Press SEARCH
4. Press VOL +
5. Press STOP
If successful, you will hear three descending tones. Wait 5 seconds for tone.

To Manually Unpair 50.0, 52.0, and 54.0 Remote Control
1. Press the System info button on the front panel of the Hopper.
2. Press and hold the SAT mode button until all mode lights on the top of the
remote light up then let go of the button.
3. Press and hold HOME and GUIDE at the same time for about 10 seconds till hear it unpair, three descending tones.

Sometimes it takes a while and then they will show up. Also for the EHD. She needs time to get in the mood & settle down.

The guide finally populated. I am not sure why I thought there would be more apps but i did. I am a little confused about the comments that my timers will appear. If they are restored from the remote why would there be a delay?

I don't know. Just saying that is what happened to me when I upgraded from HWS to Hopper 3. When I did a restore from the remote to the Hopper 3 it took a while before the saved timers to show up. If you aren't seeing them yet maybe your remote didn't have them saved.

Your timers will not magically appear. Did you unpair the remote as I suggested in my earlier post? Once that is done pair the remote to the H3 and try again.

You don't have to be on any menu to unpair a remote. You do have to be on system info to pair a remote
