I Destroyed my PocketDISH HD

Don't see anything like that.

I have:

system.bin
dish_pvp.sys
id.sys
ndx.avx

These are the only files that are not a graphic or an atx file.

I would copy all of them - for sure only one required - "dish_pvp.sys".
8bit: If you could do this, it would be a great service for all us PocketDish orphans. Please try it and tell us the results if it's not too much of a burden and you have access to a cheap drive.

Wife has no problem with a new Archos 7 or a cheaper refurbished 605 or 705. That's why she is my wife. Sometimes I think she is going to act like a nagging mom, but she rarely does thank goodness. She will have a cow if she finds a new piece of coral or fish in our reef tank though, I have a very strict fish buget.

I did not copy any files, but it would be great Smith if you could share how to replace an Archos hard drive. Hopefully I will not need it, but I will be saving files on my new unit just in case.

My first though when I busted it, "I wonder if I can just buy a cheap hard drive and get a computer guy to install it". If it wasn't for the 15%, I would take it back and try myself.

I have to say though, Archos is a little of a glass half full/empty. It's a pain they will not fix it, but for a little more than a repair, they will give you an upgraded unit. They did not have to do the 15% off either.

I think I'm going to settle for an Archos 5 w/ warranty I wanted an Archos 7 when I still had a smaller 4.5" PocketDISH. 7" Screens do not really fit in a pocket.

It's sad but true, all PocketDISH owners are now orphans, alone in the world to fend for themselves.

I'll see if I can scrounge up a Toshiba drive (has to be Toshiba?) and copy my files over and see what happens. I'll post back!

There is no question - it works, tested ! And still works up today.

Toshiba as I'm aware is only one maker of those "PCMCIA" FF disks what Archos install inside.

These players have an HD plug-in that will display 720p through the DVR Station. I don't think 1080i is an option. The touch-sensitive displays themselves are 800 X 480 IIRC, so no HD there either.
I'm certain we've had this conversation more than a year ago but never the less... I don't think anybody cares what the display resolution is. We simply want to download programs recorded in HD. I almost NEVER record SD anymore and neither does most anyone else.

This makes PDs toys or devices only good for still predominately SD only cartoon channels for kids or SD only porno channels for adults.

However I do admit there is small bunch of folks who haven't made the move to HDTVs and THEY can use PDs the way they were intended.

When they find they are going to be away from home long enough to miss TV, they plug PD into their 622, scroll down the list of recordings picking what they want. Then when they've got their chothes changed and their teeth brushed, and maybe bag packed, they grab the PD and sail out the front door with whatever on their 622 that met their fancy at that moment.

Us HDTV folks CANT do that.

I don't even know where mine is anymore.

Well...

I use(d) my PocketDISH everyday for at least 2 hours. My mainstay was Sirius Radio and SD shows I recorded specifically for my daily use. I also have about 500 DVDs converted to Divix and typically stored about 15 on my PD for emergencies. I also search for premiums movies to record both for HD at home and for SD on the go.

I know of no other PMP that allows one to get so much free content (not really free since I'm paying my bill), everything else like Iphone needs to have content purchased for $0.99 to $2.99 each or your converted DVDs or CDs. I know I enjoy recording Saterday night Siruis Beat Remixes and them having new current remixed music available without having to buy something on Itunes.

I have as much HD as anyone else, but I also have the SD versions of each channel. I pretty much know what TV I'm going to watch at the gym, so if there is an HD show I watch at home and might also watch at the gym, I'll record both versions.

IMHO, it's a great product that for $100 per year (my $300 PD lasted 3 years) added to my $1500 per year sat bill, it is very well worth it.

I would guess that someone with Turbo HD only would not have any use for these devices. I would also guess that someone who does not have a standard use of these devices might also not know how to program their DVR to use it. Recording all shows in HD won't work for someone who simply might wish to plug the PD in and load for on the run. I have to plan my SD recording for my PD ahead of time, when that is done (takes a few extra minutes once a week), I can plug and load while getting dressed in the morning without issue.

A device that will load HD and SD will be a great addition. With the 320GB of the Archos 7, there is at least room for HD content, but I would imagine it would take one hour for a two hour HD program to get transfered anyway. That is not really practical.

I had my PD was before there was so much HD, I simpley adjusted my recording behaviour as HD became more and more abundant so that I could enjoy both HD at home and my PD on the go.

Remember, you could use any size external disk ( with USB interface and external power adapter ) for play movies/songs from it by connecting to PVP [Archos]; with little effort [money] you could use the same disk for transfer those recordings from your DVR.

How do you back up your Archos system files? Do you have the steps you used to swap out your hard drive?
Where did you get the little screwdriver to remove those special screws?

Thanks!!

Fantastic post!

You captured the situation perfectly. If someone is considering buying an Archos device this will tell them everything they need to know to know whether it's a good idea for them or not.

Thank you.

I'm going to dig mine out and see if I can figure a recording scheme that works for me for traveling and HD home viewing.

Thanks again.

It's just FAT organized disk, so simple copy of all folders will give you full backup; minimal backup would be just System folder with that key file dish_pvp.sys.
I have it in my garage :). Try Fry's or Microcenter.

Looks like I am SOL. I can't get my PC to recognize my unit when I hook it up. I dropped mine too. I wish I had known about that silly serial number issue sooner.... ARGHHHHH!!!
