in regards to "moving"....

i live in grand rapids, mi currently receive some of my local channels OTA in HD.

i see people talking about moving all the time, and I am wanting to make sure I am OK to do this before I pull the trigger.

If I go to DISH's website, and type in my address, it confirms that I canNOT receive the locals in HD.
However, if I type in a friends address in Rochester Hills, it tells me I CAN receive the locals in HD without an OTA tuner .

I went to the dishchannelchart.com and this is the information I have about the GR locals.
WZZM TV 13 (ABC) WZZM871012s13 110° E*10
WWMT TV 3 (CBS) Kalamazoo WWMT871112s13 110° E*10
WOOD TV 8 (NBC) WOOD871212s13 110° E*10
WXMI TV 17 (Fox) WXMI871312s13 110° E*10
WXSP CA 15 (MyTV) (14) WXSP. 8 148° E*2
WGVU TV 35 (PBS) WGVU871612s13 110° E*10
WLLA TV 64 (FamilyNet) Kalamazoo (1) WLLA8717 22 61.5° E*3
WTLJ TV 54 (TCT) Muskegon WTLJ872012s13 110° E*10
WOTV TV 41 (ABC) Battle Creek/Kalamazoo WOTV872112s13 110° E*10

If I "move" to say detroit, these are the numbers on that site.
WXYZ DT (ABC) Detroit, MI WXYZ6459 4 118° AMC16
WWJ DT (CBS) Detroit, MI WWJ6460 4 118° AMC16
WDIV DT (NBC) Detroit, MI WDIV6461 5 11
WJBK DT (Fox) Detroit, MI WJBK6462 5 118

Is there anything I need to do, or is this even going to work with my location? I don't understand the process, and haven't found a clear answer yet.

Without looking at everything to see if it will work... Here is the first thing to overcome.

Are you willing to buy either a Dish 500+ or a Dish 1000+, to receive broadcasts from the 118 satellite?

If so, then you will be able to receive the Detroit, MI HD locals since they are currently on a CONUS beam on 118.7. Then the next step would be to see where the Detroit SD local channels are, and if that spotbeam overlaps the GR area, or where-ever your physical receiving dish antenna is located.

EDIT:
Okay, the 8 Detroit, MI SD locals are also on Satellite 110, Spotbeam 13. Since you can receive 110/Spot 13 in Grand Rapids, you should also be able to receive the Detroit channels on 8030 - 8037.

Looks like your choices are:
(1) Dish 1000+ for 110/118.7/119/129; or
(2) Dish 500+ for 110/118.7/119 and a Dish 500 for either 129 or 61.5.

Is the Dish 500+/Dish 1000+ an addition to the one I currently have? So I will need 2 dishes, or just one?

I believe I have Dish 1000.. I am going to double check once I get home...

If that is the case, is there anything I need to do physically to the dish? Or is the only thing I need to do is call and "move"?

If you have a Dish 1000, you will need to REPLACE that dish with a Dish 1000 +

A dish 1000 can see 110/119/129.
A dish 1000+ can see 110/118/119/129.

You MUST be able to see 118° to get HD from Detroit.

Also you need to check to make absolutely sure you can receive a signal from tp 26 at 110° to be able to receive standard def locals from Detroit. Remember you cannot keep the GR SD locals and get the Detroit HD locals at the same time.

Go to the point dish screen. GR is in a place where you could get NOTHING on that TP because of interferance from a different spot beam.

Chicago may be a better destination. Check signal on TP 31 at 110° and 12 at 129°. That is where the SD and HD locals are. The network channels in Chicago are on a ConUS 110 beam so no problem there.

Can you explain how to
Check signal on TP 31 at 110° and 12 at 129°?

On your receiver, press Menu+6+1+1. On most receivers that takes you to the "point dish" screen. Check the signal levels on the transponders and satellite locations there.
