IFA 2011 – 2 - 7 September

PRESS RELEASE

IFA 2011 sets new records once again

1,441 exhibitors – 140,200 m² of rented display area – an important economic factor

Berlin, 31 August 2011 – The world’s most important and largest trade show for consumer electronics and home appliances, IFA 2011, begins on 2 September with a further 4 per cent increase in the rented display area and 1,441 exhibitors (+ 1%). Taking as its slogan this year “Get in touch”, it resumes its successful progress as it continues to consolidate its leading position in the world.

There has been expansion in all areas of IFA, with new exhibitors and many existing exhibitors having expanded their display areas. The extensive demand for display space has been met by constructing temporary halls and through the creative use of outdoor areas and the passageways connecting the exhibition halls. The organizers of IFA, gfu – Gesellschaft für Unterhaltungs- und Kommunikationselektronik mbH, and Messe Berlin expect IFA 2011 to even surpass the record results of the 50th IFA held last year.

“We are particularly pleased with the continued increase in demand for display space and the increased number of exhibitors. This reflects the appeal of IFA and its outstanding position as a worldwide leader. As a vital trade fair for the placing and taking of orders for both of the sectors that it serves, as well as being the pre-eminent meeting place at the start of the most important sales period, IFA 2011 will provide an essential impetus”, according to Dr. Rainer Hecker, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of gfu.

Dr. Christian Göke, Chief Operating Officer of Messe Berlin, stated “It is already clear that this is the best event ever in the history of IFA. Never before has the industry invested in such a large display area. We have high expectations of this year’s IFA.”

“The international home appliance sector, now represented for the fourth time in Berlin, has become a regular component of IFA. The section entitled Home Appliances@IFA is even larger than it was last year.

This demonstrates that IFA is without doubt the most important trade show for our sector and that the home appliance industry is more than comfortable to be part of this event. We expect IFA 2011 to bring about worldwide advances in our business”, said Dr. Reinhard Zinkann, Chairman of the ZVEI Electrical Appliances Product Division and a member of the board of ZVEI.

IFA is an important economic factor
In the current economic situation, one of uncertainty, accompanied by financial and debt crises, IFA has a particular role to play as an economic factor. This was referred to by Dr. Rainer Hecker, Chairman of the Super-visory Board of the gfu: “The large number of innovations and product premieres presented here will have a positive influence on the markets. The first half of 2011 was relatively quiet on the consumer electronics market, making IFA particularly important. We are again expecting brisk ordering activity, ensuring that in 2011 IFA maintains its position as the world’s largest and most important trade show, not only for ordering but also for the general public.”

Growth in all sectors – new exhibitors
Newcomers in 2011 include Dell, Beko and Ford, while the SEB group is staging more extensive presentations. The displays by Krups, Rowenta, Tefal and Moulinex are located directly at the South Entrance. Also making its first appearance at IFA is the business division wmf consumer electric, which was set up at the beginning of this year.

Positive development by the markets
In general the consumer electronics market is developing positively. Market researchers are predicting growth of around seven per cent, with total sales of 690 billion euros. Growth in Europe is predicted to reach six per cent to approximately 204 billion euros and in Germany the industry is expecting growth of four per cent, with a market value of some 27 billion euros.

The situation on the home appliance market is also positive
In 2010 the industry earned 160 billion US dollars (+ 8 %) from world sales of large and small electrical appliances and is expecting global demand to increase again in 2011. For the whole of 2011 in Germany market players are forecasting an improvement of between two and four per cent in sales of large appliances, and four per cent for small appliances.

Innovations in every sector
In many cases the new products and innovations are making their first appearance exclusively at IFA in Berlin. The merging of television with the internet to create smart TV, media and devices in 3D and HD, the massive upsurge in sales of tablet PCs, apps and smartphones, and networking for the home and for people on the move, with permanent access to their favourite media, are setting the trends in consumer electronics this year.

The home appliance sector offers products that are simple to use, provide for an enhanced lifestyle, and promote healthy living. The new product generations are notable for their use of intelligent technology. Some are linked to the internet or offer smart grid solutions. Other features which are now taken for granted are outstanding design and an extremely efficient use of energy and water.

Together for the fourth time: medienwoche@IFA and medienpolitik@IFA
2011 marks the fourth year in a row that the IFA will cooperate with the Berlin Medienwoche, which is organized by the Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg and takes place at the same time as the IFA.

"Digital is now!" is the motto of this year’s International Media Congress on September 5-6, 2011 in Berlin’s ICC. Topics include the challenges facing the media, content and consumer electronics industries, among others. Opening keynote speakers are Bernd Neumann, Germany’s Minister of State for Culture, and Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner. Among the other prominent speakers are WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who will join the congress live via satellite. A key part of both congress days is the medienpolitik@IFA organized by the gfu in cooperation with the ZVEI. This year’s roundtable will focus on "Digitalization 2.0" and take place under the patronage of Minister President Kurt Beck.

The 2011 Media Congress has prepared a highly attractive program schedule featuring a number of expert podium discussions, screenings and international keynotes. The schedule makes it easy to combine a visit to the IFA with an examination of the latest perspectives on media policy, film policy, content production and the consumer electronics industry.

serviceforum@IFA 2011
IFA 2011 is presenting the meetings of the serviceforum@IFA panel for the sixth time. This is a meeting place for specialist dealers and markets, retail subsidiaries, trading groups, craft enterprises, the industry and media representatives in the consumer electronics sector. On 30 April 2012 all analogue broadcasting services will be switched off and the opportunities and challenges that this presents will be featured under the slogan “Added value through digitalization”. The serviceforum@IFA is a combined event by BVT, ZVEH und ZVEI (Consumer Electronics Product Division) with the support of the gfu and Messe Berlin. It will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, 4 September 2011 at the IFA Red Lounge.

“IFA iZone” and “IFA eLibrary”: Keen demand
Following a successful launch at last year’s IFA the iZone and IFA eLibrary sections at IFA have grown considerably. In accordance with the increasing popularity of tablet PCs and smartphones, and the many applications now available for these items of equipment, this is bound to be one of the main attractions for the public and trade visitors at IFA.

IFA TecWatch 2011: Technology for the markets of today and tomorrow
IFA features an outstanding event devoted to the future. Taking place in Hall 11.1 for the first time, IFA TecWatch presents cutting edge technology for the future markets of all the branches of industry taking part in IFA. IFA TecWatch is a unique combination of technical exhibition and a platform for communi-cation and business, presenting the latest innovations. This outstanding section of IFA is invaluable as a place where experts can exchange knowledge, as a platform for the technology transfer between research and industry, and as a launch pad for productive economic cooperation.

IFA TecWatch is also a shop window that is bound to appeal to technologically-minded members of the public and specialist dealers too, who can benefit from this early opportunity to prepare for future business activities. Some fascinating answers can be found here to questions about the future of consumer electronics and home appliances.

Joint presentations by associations
What links will there be between the next generation of home appliances in order to conserve resources and offer even simpler controls? Life in the networked home is one of the main topics of a joint presentation by the three industry associations ZVEI, ZVEH and VDE. Its slogan is “Designing networked worlds. Safeguarding the future” and the venue will be the IFA TecWatch in Hall 11.1

Innovations, product premieres and entertainment – from 2 to 7 September IFA will again be the international meeting place for trade, industry, the media and visitors from all over the world. The opening hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The video on Engadget showing the Samsung 7.7 looked impressive. The AmoLED screen looks great. Is this the largest AmoLED for a mobile device so far?

But, it still looks pokey compared to Apple's GUI. Why? Faster dual-core CPUs should have the screen respond instantly to user interaction. At least the HP TouchPad can be modded to turn off the debug logging and speeds up the GUI response time.

That is HUMONGOUS. I am curious what the market will be for it in terms of demographics. I am assuming the SII is about the same size as the Droid X.
