"We're a racing company, and they have racing equipment for sale," an official said. He added that a decision will be made on or before the Jan. 23 deadline for alternative bids.

SPORTS IN BRIEF: Team owner says IRL wants to buy CART assets, kill series

January 15, 2004

The gloves came off Wednesday over the proposed sale of the bankrupt CART series in Indianapolis this month with one race team principle accusing the Indy Racing League of wanting to "bury" its long-running open-wheel rival.

Kevin Kalkhoven, co-owner of CART team PK Racing, was responding to the IRL's announcement last week that it might bid on Championship Auto Racing Teams' assets, which include trailers, timing equipment, a mobile medical unit and other equipment. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Frank Otte has set Jan. 23 as the deadline for bids on CART, which lost about $80 million as a publicly traded company in 2003.
