Is D* doing some True HD again????

I really doubt anything changes until D10 becomes fully in service and HD channels move to MPEG4. Why would they tweak anything if all are moving to MPEG4?

I agree with Brewer...however they have moved most of the HD channels around to different sats and transponders, most likely getting ready for Sunday Ticket so it's entirely possible they allocated more bandwidth to Discovery if they had the chance to do it.

This is good news if true. I just hope we dont lose any HD channels on Sunday and have folks bash Directv over it. Hopefully Directv learned their lesson from last year.

Unless DirecTV turns of MPEG2 HD DNS in time for Sunday Ticket, I don't that it's possible to avoid turning off HD channels as there will be up to 3 more games from CBS each week compared to last year.

I haven't done a snapshot in while so take note of the date range... I'll put some PDF's up in a bit.

Yep. Unless they have a rabbit up their sleave then they will probably have to shut down 2-3 channels each Sunday this year. My thoughts are that all the current MPEG2 HD channels will be also in MPEG4 (and why not) and thus if someone calls to complain that they can't get TNT on Sunday due to Sunday Ticket then DirecTV has an answer for them and can get them an MPEG4 receiver.

Kills 2 birds with one stone (since they don't have a choice anyway) by offering people the ability to still get the channels plus get more MPEG4 receivers in the hands of HD subs thus quickening the conversion.

I was just about to add an edit that I only expected mpeg2 to be affected, but you beat me to the punch.

There is a more important issue here. IF this is true and DiscoveryHD has gone back to 1920x1080i then it shows that there is a shred of hope in the distance for full resolution. It shows that D* does realize there is a problem. This is the MOST important thing out of all of this.

They better not turn off DNS or I will be one very angry customer. That is the only way I can get the networks in HD. They can change it to Mpeg-4 for me and I won't complain.

+1! There would be a huge outcry if HD DNS went away. People who don't need it, don't see the need for it.

I don't think it's realistic to think DirecTV is happy with the PQ of their HD channels. They just have had no choice up to this point. The problem is that many people expect DirecTV to come out and say "our PQ sucks!" which of course they aren't going to do. Heck, there isn't a company out there that would, it's suicide.

I've always been confindent that if given the chance they will upgrade PQ. If not..well..my choices are Charter which is worse and Dish which does "HD Lite" as well plus doesn't have Sunday Ticket. So I guess I'm stuck with whatever they give me. But my MPEG4 HD locals via the sat have been as good as OTA which to me has always been a good sign.

HD DNS will go the way of all the other HD channels. Simulcast in MPEG4 and the MPEG2 versions shut down as soon as they can.

I am fine with that, because I have the necessary Mpeg-4 equipment.

When your locals are lit up in HD, DNS should be away permanently and forever IMO.

I don't disagree there, but my locals won't be up for a while. I am in market #64 (Huntington, WV/Charleston, WV).
