Autopay to a credit card is the way to go. You pay when you have the money and you get credit card rebate points.

I just called and tryed to upgrade from a VIP211 to a 722 DVR. What a waste of time. They advertise a FREE DVR upgrade on there current promo. however they charge you 150 up front then credit you 100 after you install it. Now i know it's been a while since I've had BASIC math but 150 - 100 still leaves 50 over. How does that equate to free? Not to mention the guy on the phone barely spoke clear english.
Free for new customers, nearly free(tm) for existing. I still prefer paying 50$ overall than being told "Too bad" like I was from the cable company when they came out with new hardware.
Yes, any advertising for FREE DVR upgrade is referring to a new customer upgrade from standard equipment.
