(For proof, look at D*'s specs for their new HD-DVR. They have the same size hard drive that E* is using, but says that it will hold 20% more HD content than E*'s will. I read this to mean that their compression shrinks the content to a ratio roughly 20% more constrictive than E's.)
Or E* has reserved that 20% for upgrades and bug fixes.
I have had D* HD since March of 2000 and it looks just fine.
