I have a subscription to Computer Graphics World and they had a seven page spread on the John Carter movie. I had wondered if the actors did optical motion capture for the Tharks, making a second pass to capture the second set of arms, but the article said they abandoned that technique. They used 3D witness camera tracking to guide the animation.
