CES Announcement-- A company with a fairly low U.S. profile has introduced one of the category challenging products of this year's Consumer Electronics Show- a 32-inch Hi-Def TV with a built in satellite TV tuner.

HUMAX USA announced that it is developing a line of LCD TVs that feature integrated DIRECTV Tuners. The new TVs, a standard-definition, 20-inch model that will hit the marketplace in the first half of 2006, followed by a 32-inch high-definition model later in the year, do not require a separate outboard DIRECTV set-top box tuner. HUMAX plans on distributing these products through its current retail channel as well as other DIRECTV-approved retailers.

Targeted primarily at second room installations, these all-in-one products will allow consumers a single-cable, space-saving installation for receiving DIRECTV services. The ultra-thin and elegant design of the HUMAX LCD TVs with integrated DIRECTV Tuners make them ideal for placement on a wall, counter top or entertainment center. In addition to integrating HUMAX's high-quality DIRECTV receiver technology, these sets are equipped with a variety of inputs and outputs for complete connectivity with today's state-of-the-art home entertainment systems.

The 20-inch model is 4:3 and features a modem and USB port, component video input, two composite video inputs, and an audio and video output. Available in the first half of 2006, the 20-inch model has an anticipated MSRP of $749.

The 32-inch model, which is 16:9, is unlike other televisions in the market because it is based on interchangeable modules: HUMAX has opted to separate the display technologies from the tuner and processing technologies allowing for development of various TV modules that can support different tuning features and options.

The 32-inch model will ship with a DIRECTV MPEG4 TV module consisting of a DIRECTV HD Tuner, ATSC tuner, component video, composite video, S-video and HDMI inputs. HUMAX plans on developing additional modules to support future DIRECTV hardware. The company expects the 32-inch HD model to be available in Q4, with pricing to be determined.

"The HUMAX LCD TVs with integrated DIRECTV Tuners make it possible for a DIRECTV customer to simply connect a coaxial cable for a true plug-and-play experience, there is no need for external wiring or connections associated with an external set-top box," said HUMAX USA's vice president of business development and strategic marketing, Tony Goncalves. "And with DIRECTV's high-quality digital signal, the picture is second to none."

"We are excited to be able to leverage the strength of our background in the DIRECTV space -- and most recently the flat panel TV space -- to deliver consumers a seamless DIRECTV experience. Providing consumers with advanced technologies while simplifying their lives is the foundation of HUMAX USA -- and these latest HUMAX LCD TVs with integrated DIRECTV Tuners perfectly illustrate this," added Goncalves.

"The HUMAX LCD TVs with DIRECTV offers the complete DIRECTV experience from a single remote control without interconnecting wires, making it easy to use and ideal for all areas of the home," said Romulo Pontual, executive vice president and chief technology officer, DIRECTV, Inc., "The compactness and simple installation of this integrated TV is the perfect way to bring DIRECTV to areas like the bedroom or home office where space is at a premium and a simple connection is highly desirable."

Now this sounds intresting and something I look foward to if we can move in from having "Boxes" on top or near the tv especially as flat screens become more popular.

it is interesting. however, what happenes when you need to upgrade your programming receiver? it is 1 unit. Now if directv came out with something like the "cable card" pcmcia adapter that would truly be great!

It sounds like it is a replaceable/upgradable daughter card/unit, since the article states "HUMAX plans on developing additional modules to support future DIRECTV hardware", although, perhaps not intended to be user-servicable, but, no doubt some kind of modular design is being implemented.

I thought this thread would be about LCD TV'S not being able to use the peanut shaped Directv remote control... Which really sucks. Anyone know where there is a really good site for finding remote codes for LCD TV'S?

Didn't RCA have a big screen TV with a standard DTV reciever built in a couple of years ago? I don't think they were very big sellers.

sears sold that rca 62" many many years ago. it was the first hd tv sold in maine where i live. back somewhere around 1995. i personnally dont like any combo device nomatter what it is. dvd/vcr, tv/vcr, tv/dvd, or tv/dtv. my only reason for that is that if one part of the component breaks then its usally an expencive repair or replace both. where as multi components you just replace/repair the defective unit, maby its just me. i am paranoid.
