Hi there. I'm a new poster, so please excuse if this is covered elsewhere. I run a large Dish Network CATV headend for our university. I'd like to add Local on the 8's to the Weather Channel, currently on Dish channel 214. Is this possible? If so, how? Where do I obtain the insertion equipment, etc. I've searched long and hard, with no results. Do I contact the Weather Channel or Dish? I just don't know. Thanks.

I read a thread a while back, must have been two or three years ago when they firsted added the application, the name of the equipment used by cable companies to do locals on the 8's, so it was mentioned before, but it is hard to find certain things with a search. Contacting the cable company or The Weather Channel would be the best way as that is probably the type of weather on the 8's that you want, not the kind that Dish Network uses.

Hey, related question: DirecTV now offers a similar application loaded on all receivers to display local weather data automatically with local on the 8s. Any word if Dish will eventually try to offer the same thing?

I imagine this could attract customers. My parents were hesitant to switch due to the lack of local on the 8s, and still complain about not having it.

DISH was due to have this 1-2 years ago -- something VERY similar to cable's local on the 8s -- but it is yet to happen. Of course, you can load on-demand weather manually through DISH's interactive page or waiting for the icon to appear on Ch 214. So, has DirecTV beat DISH to the punch?

Dish already has this "feature" for a while. It's an icon that brings up an application that has a still shot radar . D* is alittle ifferent but same thing

Like I said above, it's not the same. The still radar shot is a huge overview on a tiny portion of the screen. I can scarcely tell a thing from it, aside from if it might rain today. Will it rain the the next half hour? I can't see it well enough. Local on the 8s had a full screen radar view, a lot more current conditions, larger icons that were much more legible, and text forecasts. Plus, it didn't take forever to load.

One more time D* and E* have the same thing ITAS NOT THE REAL LOCAL ON THE EIGHTS just a pale imitation

What I'm really looking for

What I want to do is mimic, almost exactly, what Comcast does with local on the 8's. I'd like to have an automatic system that inserts the local on the 8's (LOT8S) portion of the weather channel into the national feed. I just haven't been able to figure out how to get the LOT8S source program and the hardware to automatically cut it in/out.

I'm sure The Weather Channel will sell you the hardware and programming themselves, but I have no idea what it costs.

Well, I haven't seen what Direct does, but it sounded better than what Dish does.

As for the OP, I'd say you need to get with The Weather Channel. I'm thinking at this point Dish may not pass sufficient information to do a full IntelliStar display.

I have a contact over at the The Weather Channel that is the head of all the Locals on the 8's stuff. He (He, I think) is the person that did a lot on the Directv local on the 8's.
Here is his contact info:

I'll keep plugging away at this. If I come up with a solution, I'll post my findings. Keep in mind that I'm approaching this from a headend ops perspective, so what I'll probably end up with won't work at home.
