From FierceCable:
Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) may be looking at ways to offer home-automation services to its satellite TV subscribers, according to trademark applications the company filed for the brand "Dish Smart Home Services."
Dish wants to use the brand "Dish Smart Home Services" to offer subscribers "home and office automation systems comprising wireless and wired controllers," according trademark applications obtained by FierceCable. The company says the brand could also be used for security products such as cameras, alarm systems and remote monitoring hardware.
Dish filed five trademark applications for the brand "Dish Smart Home Services" on May 22. One of the applications details how Dish could use the brand to offer customers the "installation of solar energy systems and alternative energy products for residential and commercial use." Another application says it could use the brand for "medical assistance services" to people with health problems who would use "wearable medical devices with automated alert and monitoring capacity."
Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), AT&T, (NYSE: T) Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and other cable operators have expanded into home monitoring and security services in the last year. It's not clear what infrastructure Dish, which doesn't have a two-way broadband network, would use to offer home automation services.
