We have also found that it is not as bad as the reviews have stated. The kids (well 18 and 14 now, boy I'm getting old!) have enjoyed the 4 boards we've played so far.
As for the 16 x 9, just go to the Wii settings before playing and change it to 4:3. It doesn't look any worse, and at least it fills the screen.
