I have a genie that is connected to the internet. I have used playon.tv and vuze to stream videos on the genie before, but since the computer I have those programs on is connected to my network wirelessly, the dependability of the stream is not very good (lots of freezing of the video).

I had an extra 1TB external HD laying around, so i hooked it up directly to my belkin router. The belkin router has a media sharing feature powered by twonky. Once i hooked the external hard drive up to the router, it showed up under the "computers" list on my Genie. I figured this would curb the issue of the media being sent over wifi as the router and directv box are hardwired via ethernet. However, when i click to view its content, it says that no content can be found.

Is there something I am missing here? Is it possible to play content directly from a drive set up through your home network, or does the directv box require some form of media sharing software (playon.tv, Windows media player, ect.) to play the media?
