BERLIN-- Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center Edition will include digital TV reception technology from Fujitsu Siemens Computers under a deal announced at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin.

The deal calls for Microsoft to integrate Fujitsu Siemens' Activy technology for Digital Video Broadcast reception of digital TV transmissions in its Media Center products, and for the two companies to collaborate in further developing advanced TV systems.

Fujitsu Siemens, best known for its computers, has been expanding into consumer electronics in recent years. The company, a joint venture between Japan's Fujitsu and Germany's Siemens, initially developed the DVB-based technology for its own media center system.

More Multimedia

At the IFA show, Fujitsu Siemens also announced the launch of several new home entertainment products.

The company's Scaleo E entertain device is essentially a PC running Windows Media Center. The system is equipped with, among other components, a Pentium 4 processor from Intel, 512MB of main memory, a 160GB hard drive and a multiformat DVD dual layer reader-writer unit. The product will be available in November, in time for the important holiday shopping season, Bjorn Fehrm, senior director of digital home products at Fujitsu Siemens, said at a news conference.

A new version of Activy Media Center, the 530/570 series, offers a string of features for high-definition television fans. These include: high-definition reception for DVB-satellite and DVB-terrestrial models; high-definition recording, editing and DVD burning; high-definition networked Media Player; and high-definition universal plug and play AV Media Server.

"I don't know of any other HD-ready product in the market that offers all this," Fehrm said.

The product, which will also be available in November, is expected to cost around $1250.
