Minimum picture size

With kids in school etc I cannot justify paying for a high end set. But the question arises what is the minimal size needed for it to be worthwhile.

Feel free to break it down by CRT?LCD etc. I am just looking for thoughts from others that might have gone down this road before. Is a 27 or 30 inch CRT worth it or should I save my pennies till i can afford something larger?

For me, I assume we are talking HD, anything under 50" ish is not worth it and I would wait. Especially if that 50" ish or less costs more than $2500.
