Baseball Next For NBC Sports?

There could be baseball on the horizon as well. As NBC looks to add compelling content to its NBC Sports Network, ESPN’s deal with Major League Baseball ends in 2013. Lazarus, who did deals to carry Atlanta Braves baseball at Turner Broadcasting for years, called baseball a premiere property and one that would eat a lot of innings to help fill the schedule of a 24-hour, 52 week sports networks.

Yankees, Pirates Talking A.J. Burnett Trade

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [February 10 at 12:34pm CST]

12:34pm: There seems to be a fair amount of optimism about a deal, Heyman tweets.

10:28am: The Pirates haven't yet offered to pay $10MM of the $33MM remaining on Burnett's contract, Heyman tweets.

7:57am: The Yankees and Pirates continue discussing a possible A.J. Burnett trade, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports. The Yankees are willing to pay a substantial portion of the $33MM remaining on the right-hander’s contract through 2013, but the teams are still a few million apart. The Yankees first asked the Pirates to pay well over $11MM, Heyman writes.

The Yankees want to create payroll room for a designated hitter and appear to be leaning toward Raul Ibanez, perhaps because they prefer his ability to play the outfield. Johnny Damon and Eric Chavez also intrigue the Yankees as possible free agent additions, according to Heyman. The Pirates rejected the Yankees’ request for Garrett Jones, Heyman writes.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that Burnett’s no-trade list includes all of the teams on the West Coast (Twitter links). Sherman expects the Yankees to trade Burnett before Spring Training and suggests the team is waiting to see if the Pirates or another club offers to absorb more money.

Yeah news around here is that it should happen.

Are they gonna now give him a long extension to they can have him under contract for 4-5 versus vs 1 ?

I think the blueprint that John Hart used many years ago and signed all those young Indian studs (Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, Carlos Baerga, Kenny Lofton, Sandy Alomar Jr., etc.) to long term deals is the way to go.

Can't wait to wave goodbye to AJ Burnett. Some guys are just not meant for the big stage...

I can't wait to wave hello to him, IMO he will do better with the pirates, less pressure, than he did with the Yankees.

Granted I know he won't play like he did with the blue Jays but he should do just fine in Pittsburgh.

I don't think it had anything to with being on the big stage and EVERYTHING to do with his control. He had the same issues as a Marlin. The BEST season he ever had was 12-9. He has always had "great stuff"... but IF you cannot control it, you will be a mediocre at best. The ONLY time he pitched well was a #1 guy in Toronto. In both Miami and NY, he was not the #1 guy.

49-50 as a Marlin.. 3.73 ERA(7 years)
34-35 as a Yankee.. 4.79 ERA(3 years)
38-26 as a Blue Jay.. 3.94 ERA(4 years)

It cannot be said it was the ball park because Yankee Stadium and Rogers Centre are good hitting ball parks...Sun Life... middle of the pack.

He is the ultimate enigma...

Red Sox, David Ortiz Settle At Midpoint

By Tim Dierkes [February 13 at 9:28am CST]

Hours before today's arbitration hearing, the Red Sox and designated hitter David Ortiz settled at the midpoint for $14.575MM, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney. Had they reached a hearing, a panel of three arbitrators would have chosen between Boston's $12.65MM submission and Ortiz's $16.5MM salary figure for 2012. Ortiz is represented by Fern Cuza of SFX.

Potentially inhibited by the cost of a draft pick, Ortiz accepted an arbitration offer from the Red Sox in December, and it took the looming threat of a hearing to force a settlement.

Marlins In Lead For Cespedes, Cubs Focused On Soler

By Steve Adams [February 12 at 9:43pm CST]

The Marlins are exchanging contract figures with 26-year-old Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, and two National League sources tell MLB.com's Joe Frisaro that the Cubs are no longer seriously in the mix. Chicago has apparently shifted its focus to 19-year-old Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler, though he is not yet eligible for free agency.

Upon his recent visit to Miami, the Marlins made Cespedes an offer that was initially reported to exceed $40MM. That number has since been denied, and Frisaro confirms that the offer was under $40MM, saying the Fish are comfortable with a number in the $30-35MM range.

The Cubs, meanwhile, are willing to spend as much as $27.5MM to land Soler, though Frisaro's sources are unclear on the number of years they'd offer. New Cubs president Theo Epstein and GM Jed Hoyer have already made one significant international splash this offseason, signing 18-year-old Cuban Gerardo Concepcion to a $7MM contract with another million dollars of incentives.

Totally agree...and you never know, there is no reason to think Burnett can't get back to what he was with the Blue Jays...or at least somewhere close to it.

Some guys are born to be on the big stage...some guys aren't. And very often you don't even know who is who until the time comes.

So many people said Mike Mussina would not be able to handle New York...so many people said Randy Johnson would, and he did...until the playoffs, where he was horrific.

If the trade happens I hope Burnett does well. I think he will.

A lot of the home runs he gave up at Yankee stadium would be long outs at PNC.

He needs to get his era down since the pirates can't score like the Yankees.

it's ALL about control... falls behind on counts too many times, walks at the times you least need one... Same issues in Miami.
