Got a call from Dish today to confirm that I had not upgraded my Dish 6000. (I had started to upgrade to the 211, but canceled it.) She told me that as of 1 August, Dish is going to replace my 6000 with a 211 and install a new dish. No charge. Agent seemed very knowledgeable about the program and said she was just briefed yesterday. I am on the outer banks of NC, so Eastern Arc is a natural for me.

So maybe it won't be just new installs who get the 1000.4 after all. I signed on in '98.

I agree with RandallA...its for the old MPEG2 HD boxes ceasing being able ot get the HD channels on 110. My 811 would be in the same boat

She did say that the 6000 and 811 would be replaced with the 211. So I'd guess you're on the list too, Iceberg.

I recieved a call from Dish tonight saying effective Aug 1, my 811(actually I have 2 plus a 622), will need to be upgraded. Af ter a little discussion, I agreed that was fine, they will be replaced with 211's, OK, they need an appointment(bummer cannot ship).

I set up an appointment and then they said they needed a credit card # to confirm.

A little background here, I have been a subscriber for, I guess, 8-10 years, I currently auto-pay via credit card. They already have my credit card #. I have never been late on a payment, etc. etc.

I refused to provide a number over the phone, I told them to email me, no deal.

I asked for a supervisor, she said they only can see the last four digits. She said it was because I lease, they need a guarantee if I break lease and don't return receivers, they need to charge my card, I said fine, charge the card if that happens that you have on record.

She said they can't do that - ?????

Any way, I told her to switch me to the cancellation dept, after waiting on hold five minutes, I hung up.

Now I guess on 8/1, my 811's will cease to get HD, what a bunch of baloney.

The switch of 110 from MPEG2 to 4 seems a major impetus all right. But she did say l would be getting a new dish also. So I though that implies all channels I receive will be available on the EA sats on 1 August. But she didn't say it would be a 1000.4 dish, so who knows. I'm just glad to get upgraded for free.

Update - I called Dish, after escalating up to the cancellation dept, they set up appt without giving them the card # they already had on file.

After all that, I asked her why I had to go to all this hassle, and she replied that the system requires a card #, I told her the "system" needs a checkbox titled "charge to card on record", but she blew that off.

I told her I will never give out a card # to someone that calls me, she replied they thought they would leaving a message and I would call them back - what a crock.

Since E11 will just have barely launched by Aug 1st they will not have been able to move either E8 or E2 over... EA has a ways to go yet before it has the satellites.

I suspect that Dish is actually abiding by credit card company rules designed to ultimately protect you. Your card "on file" is used to make monthly recurring account payments - i.e. a particular purpose authorized by you - and it cannot be cited by the merchant for other charges. This is a good thing for you! Without such a provision, the merchant could go fishing, so to speak. Of course, when it is necessary to make a charge for some other purpose, and assuming you agree to this, the merchant needs to obtain your permission again. Their software is setup to enforce this, and you therefore have to provide your complete card number again as an authentication measure. I understand this may seem inefficient and illogical, but it also provides some level of protection. YMMV ;)

You didn't mention what channels you get now, nor what antenna you have now. I'm guessing you'll get another 500 for pointing at 61.5 (Norfolk locals?), and possibly a DP34 switch. If you already have a 1000.2, then the DP34 won't be needed.

Any change I've ever made in hardware has automatically been charged to the credit card used for my monthly service autopay, without me giving them the number again. Since this is a hardware change, I can't see why they'd need the card # again.

Of course, I haven't made any changes since I got my 622 in February 2006, so getting the card # again might be a change since 2006.

I'm a 9 year subscriber on auto-pay who recently upgraded my owned receivers to 2 leased Dish HD receivers and a 1000.2 antenna. I had to provide a credit card number for the upgrade. The card on file for paying my monthly bill is only authorized for the monthly bill payment.
