Afternoon all, I have a DTV oval dish with triple LNB. I feed 2 SD and 1 HD receivers. I also have an OTA diplexed on the signal to the HD Receiver. I've just ordered a new Sony XBR and would like to upgrade to a second HD receiver. I think I will now be in need of a 5 x 4 multi switch. If I read these forums correctly, I need to run 4 lines from the triple LNB and 1 line from the OTA to the multi switch. From the multi switch I'll need 1 line to each receiver and then diplex ( or split the signal, not sure of the proper term ) the signal at each receiver. Could my multi switch be unpowered or is a powered the best option?

If you have 5 receivers, I think you'll need a 5x8 mutliswitch but everything else you mention conceptually is correct.

you do need a 5x8. some are powered, some arent. basic rule if it comes with a power pack, you HAVE to use it.

Not always true!

A lot of 3x4 and 3x8's have power jacks. In their case, power supplies are needed only for long runs.

That said, however, I've never seen or heard of a nob-powered 4x8 or a 5x8.
