I agree. To that end I've purchased a couple of spares in the event the 40.0 may become unavailable at some point.

Oh, you can find plenty of 40.0s on websites like eBay and other sites (many even brand new),
 
54, mostly and the 20.x series is a close 2nd. Those are some versatile remotes thbat you can program to run almost anything, including setting the default volume/mute buttons for an Audio device, just like you can on a Hopper or Wally. You can lock the remote to a particular channel and lock it form changing inputs and if your Hopper remote stops working, you can grab a 20 remote, make sure it's set to channel 1 and it'll run a Hopper without having to manually pair it
