Which western digital hard drive is best for the 722. Also can you record on the drive then disconnect it will it retain the programs. I bought the WD My Dvr Expander and the instructions say if it disconnected it will lose the information. Are all external hard drives like this or just this one?

Just about any self-powered 3.5" HD will work. You probably wasted a few bucks on that Expander. Just hype. Nothing special about it. Yes you can disconnect.
The cheapest WD My Books (USB only) are fine. I have 2 now running with a USB switch - no hassle switching between them and I have room for 2 more.
I just purchased a WD 1TB My Book Essential (WDH1U10000N) last night at Best Buy for $129.99 plus tax. The 750GB version was $119.99. I though for $10 why not. Plugged it right in and it fired right up. About an hour prior via Dish chat I had my external hard drive feature activated.
