I just purchased a DirecTV package on Wednesday. The tech arrived at 9:45 am the next day to install. The package that I ordered and had verified 3 times was the $65.99 package less the rebate and add back in the additional receiver would be $44.99 for the first year, then increasing to regular price for the second year. This also includes Showtime/Starz free for the first 3 months. When I ordered, again, my price was verified as $44.99 and that I did not want to order HD service, which would be an additional $10. When the tech arrived, he brought HD equipment. I immediately called and said that I did not order HD. I was told that it was needed in order to receive local channels but I would not be paying for HD service. So, of course, the tech installed the equipment. Later that evening when I finally received an email, I went to my account online so I could do my rebate. It stated that I owed $84.99. I understand that the rebate doesn't show yet, but it showed my original package price of $75.99, so I am being charged for HD. They are telling me that if I want to 'upgrade' my receivers to standard definition it would cost me a $69 fee, a $99 fee and two charges of $50!
My bottom line question is: Do I have to have HD service and equipment in order to get the local channels? My friend who lives nearby has DirecTV and does not have the HD and receives everything with no problem...I am very confused here. If being the case, why when I said that I did not want HD service was I not told it was mandatory. And why would I be told that I needed HD equipment but wouldn't be charged for HD service.
Sorry to rant, but I am frustrated with my experience already!
