New HDTV upstairs, now I want HD for it too!

I know this has been asked a lot, but I am looking for advice.

I have a 622 on my hdtv downstairs, and the regular SD coax output up to my bedroom upstairs. This was fine until we bought a second HDTV for upstairs. Now the SD just rankles me, and I want good HD for the bedroom too.

I know my options are to run an HDMI or Component cable from the 622 up to the bedroom, and then we would be able to see HD up there, but would have to watch the same thing as is being watched downstairs.

I also know I have an option to get a second HD receiver for upstairs. This is where it gets complicated. Dish's site doesn't make it clear what the costs would be for this second receiver, or how it would work.

What do other people do in this situation? Can I get a second 622 (or 722 I guess) and how much would that cost? Upfront? Install? Monthly? Dish's site is all too confusing.

The problem with running the second output from the downstairs 622 is that it is a long way, and not an easy install so I am not confident in doing the job well. I was figuring if the cost wasn't prohibitive, simply getting a second receiver might be the way to go.

Anyway, any advice would be welcome!
 
You might also look into the 612 if you want to keep the DVR. Otherwise, you could probably get a 211 on the cheap somewhere.

If you don't usually watch both TVs at the same time, you could certainly run cables up to the second TV (I recommend component since they handle distance better than HDMI), get a second UHF remote, and set up a TV1 UHF Pro deal on your current 622.
 
Remember that component connections are not hdcp compliant. Dish and other providers are being forced into hdmi connections only. At some time in 2008 you MAY not be receiving hd through component.

It is not a Dish thing. Some installers have already been instructed to connect hdmi only. Dish or any other provider has no choice in the matter.
 
And yet, we (the RSP) still buy our HDMI and component cables from Dish. No matter to me, though; I don't sell their overpriced cables to the customer anyway. It's all still speculation until it actually happens.

On a side-note: I only install with HDMI anymore. Heh.
 
Have you had your 622 for over a year? If so, you would qualify for a DIU 722 for $149-$100 rebate. You would have a lease fee and dvr fee added to your bill.
BTW, there will be changes to the DIU plan on Feb 1. What exactly they will be I am not sure of.
 
When do you think Dish will come up with a dual-HD tuner reciever? That seems to be the best solution. I am thinking about getting a second HDTV also, to replace my old SD second set. I understand that a second reciever will work fine, but then I can't watch my recorded programs on either tv. I am admit that I am spoiled to the dual-tuner dvr.
 
Isn't there wireless HD transceivers out on the market? This way he could use a splitter on his HDMI output to his main tv and split it to the wireless transmitter then connect the wireless HD receiver to his second HD TV.

Or maybe an HD slingbox? I guess that would require a computer attached to your second HDTV though.
 
Thanks for everyone's suggestions so far. The 612 would probably be a good option, but it doesn't appear to be available yet. Honestly unless it is a lot cheaper than a 622 or a 722, I would rather get one of those since they have the two tuners. What would be the advantage (other than maybe price) of getting a 612?

Does anyone know what the cost implications are of adding a second HD receiver to my account? Is it an additional $20 for the HD package? Is it an additional lease fee? Or an HD activation fee or whatever that is? Keep in mind I already have a 622 with the $20 HD package.

As for HD Wireless transceivers, I am guessing those would be hugely expensive as regular SD transceivers with pretty poor quality are pretty expensive also. It would be cheaper to just get a second receiver I am thinking.

I 100% agree though that a two HD output HD DVR receiver is the ultimate here, I just wish Dish would do it. The other problem with a second receiver is of course that I would have to record things in both places and wouldn't be able to watch those things in HD on the other TV. So Dish needs to get on with allowing me to network my receivers as well, so I can watch things recorded on both DVR's in both places.

Any other good solutions? What do other people do?

I emailed the CEO and got a 722 for our bedroom 40" Sony. The regular route wanted me to spend $600 and buy one. (Because we already have a 622 and 625.) All I did was ask and they said yes, a 722 for $99 upgrade fee, and I pay the monthly box fee for that one, the others are included in the DVR advantage.
 
So I'm assuming based on that response, that when they install my 2nd HD receiver this weekend, that I will get the same HD channels at no additional cost. (Just the monthly receiver fee.) If I'm making the wrong assumption, please advise someone.
 
I have two leased 622's and the DVR advantage 250 with the HD pack and the cost for the 2nd 622 is a $6.00 lease fee and a $5.98 DVR fee and that's all. BTW, both 622's get the same programing.

Your viewing package is what it is, for all receivers. Just need an HD box to see those channels. Yes, you will get the exact same set up on the 2nd box.
 
Ooops, that's what I get for writing in a hurry before going home of the day. -:)

Thanks for the clarification. I thought so, but the Customer Agent told me I'd be paying an extra $20 charge per month for the 2nd box of HD channels. I was pretty sure he was one of the many uninformed agents and didn't bother to question him on that.

Wireless HDMI transceivers shown at CES 2008 are going to sell for around $300 retail when they hit store shelves. I believe TERK announced one at the $299 price point for shipment in a Q2. Since most of these are designed to hook up a wall-mounted TV, the range is really short - 10 meters. There are also wired HDMI extenders that use two parallel runs of Cat 5 UTP.

A second receiver is really the way to go; the cost of the wireless transceiver, and HDCP compatible splitter is way more than a second receiver.
 
It's been mentioned before in this thread, but it bears repeating. The 612 (should be available in Feb or March) is right up your alley. 2 Tuners (no PiP) , DVR, single HDTV output with no backfeed. No word on price yet (or at least that I've heard).
 
I'm actually going to be facing a similar decision later this year when I get a projector for upstairs. My concern about getting a second receiver is that it seems it would be difficult to manage having the right shows on the right receivers. I spend most of my time downstairs and would like to only have one DVR to program and store shows. If I record something on my DVR downstairs, I'd like to be able to watch it upstairs but with a second receiver, I'd have to transfer it (which isn't even possible with an external drive at the moment as far as I know).
