New Panasonic Players already

Upconvert is arguable the 2nd most important feature of a BD player. Most people have a substantial DVD library.

Depends on perspective. Im slowly replacing my DVD catalog, and the ones Im not I dont really care about. Very few of the DVD's I own wont be out on BR.

Up until this point, a HUGE majority of the dvd population owns a $69-$99 upconvert. Do you really think they care?? Kinda like most wont care about 2.0

You guys go on and keep thinking the majority cares about $300 upconverting dvd players and web content. Id rather Panasonic spend their time improving BR PQ and making faster players.

Yep, I agree elway, honestly the last thing I care my BD player does is upconvert. I would prefer that at least Sony include SACD support in all their BD players before they focus on upconverting. I had a decent size DVD library and I ended up selling most all of them already and replaced with BD's when available or not at all if I just didn't care to have the movie anymore. The majority of DVD's I still own are kids stuff that kids just don't care if it's SD, upconvert, BD, VHS, betamax, laserdisc or overly compressed DVR'd recordings from dish. :)

And like you said, I prefer my oppo for upconversion and regular dvd... oh wait, it also does SACD and DVD-A's :)

You still watch SD disk?

I don't have some hugh library of SD DVD's so for those that do I guess i can understnad the statement.

The average consumer rents most discs, not buys. Most don't have a TV set that will make that big of a difference anyways.

I watch both and had no plans to replace my DVD's like most people. I find it laughable to replace a few hundred DVD's when upconvert technology is getting better and better. Now that I think about I doubt if Panasonic will inprove their lack of upconvert abilities. Its not in their best interest to have great upconvert side by side with BD. The overwhelming majority of consumers won’t think its worth paying $30+ for a movie or the extra few hundred up front.
Depends on perspective.
The perspective of someone who frequents this site is much different from the perspective of average consumers. We are who we are that’s why we visit sites like these. J6P who sees good upconvert for the first time will be amazed and more then happy with it.

You don't even need a huge library. There are quite a few TV shows, indy movies and porn videos that were shot/produced on standard definition. They can never be properly ported over to high def media.

Im glad to start seeing more tv shows hit bluray this year too. Excited about not having to watch heroes seas 2 and supernatural's new season on dvd.

Now i just have to suffer thru Star Trek TNG :D on dvd

Panasonic's new BD35 and BD55 are to street at $399 and $499 respectively. The only reason to go with the 55 over the 35 is if you need analog outs. If you plan on either bitstreaming or doing internal decoding and PCM over HDMI, you will only need the 35. Both to street in October.

Damn, they are trying to get me to buy the 35 :)

If the comments come in that the 35 is better than the 30 on SD and HD, I might look out for a deal next year.

I'll have one, if my distributor will cooperate for once. I was looking into the LG, also, but rumor has it it might bitstream Master only. Until the new processors come out, I'll need internal decoding and then probably move the Lexicon into the bedroom until they come out with an upgrade module. Move the 30 downstairs with the Integra, and I might go with the Parasound Halo upstairs into the theater room and go back to bitstreaming or move the Lexicon upstairs into the theater room. Who knows. I've got some time to think about it.

I'm curious as to what prices the DMP-BD35 and DMP-BD55 will actually command at retail stores. It seems certain they'll be priced at least a bit below those $399 and $499 MSRP levels.

Those new player models will put more downward pressure on the prices of the DMP-BD30 and DMP-BD50. And those players are already selling well below their original MSRP levels (although they weren't when first introduced).

I would prefer that at least Sony include SACD support in all their BD players before they focus on upconverting.

SACD compatibility was one of the reasons why I spent $100 more to buy a 80GB PS3 instead of the standard 40GB version. The three flash card slots, double the number of USB 2.0 ports, double the hard disc space, PS/PS2 emulation and a bundled game also sweetened the deal.

Hovever, Blu-ray can render both SACD and DVD-Audio irrelevant by virtue of what it can do for delivering high resolution audio. Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio can both deliver 24-bit 96kHz audio. DTS-HD M.A. can run at bit rates up to 24.6 million bits per second and do 7.1 surround at 24-bit 192kHz. Not many BD titles have utilized that capability to this point. There's a Celine Dion concert disc with Dolby TrueHD 5.1 in 24-bit 96kHz.

The bad thing about DVD-A and SACD players is they were typically geared as single purpose devices -especially SACD players. Blu-ray players can deliver similar capability but in a multi-purpose device. A lot more people are going to buy Blu-ray players than the combined sales totals of DVD-A and SACD units.

Im willing to bet they wont be too low. Maybe youll see the 35 at $299 for Christmas.

If all holds true, and the PQ has increased, my current plan is to wait until 1st-2nd qtr (bday is in march :D)of next year when a another model is close, then jump on the 35 at a lower price.
