GOOD! Those were really getting bad. Hope it's fixed now.
No such luck for mine, it's actually worse. Previously, I'd only had the black screen deal a couple of times & it's happened 3 times this afternoon. Occurs leaving apps & once after exiting menu. On one of the 3 times today I had sound & no picture except for guide, menus & other non-live sat programs. Oddly, this time my OTA antenna had the same behavior - a first for me.

The updates have been makings things worse. Each update has caused more channels going black. Guide and menus display but no video. I have to reset the damn box and it works for awhile. Having to reset 4 or 5 times a day is unacceptable.

I did not know the Hopper3 was still in beta. And that we are beta testers.

When i complained about the horrible hd picture on certain channels like fx, etc the rep sent me to an account specialist who insisted it must be both my hopper 2s and that she could upgrade me free of charge with no commitment to a hopper 3. When i brought up about all the issues I've read about on here and on the dish forums page she insisted that all the bugs have been worked out and the hopper 3 is running perfectly now. I declined. Hopper 2s have been working pretty good for awhile now, knock on wood. I felt like a beta tester with the issues that hopper 2 had out the gate. I dont want to go that route again.

I must be crazy ,but I have had DISH going on 20 years and the picture quality is fine for me on my hd channels. Even the sd channels look ok, better than DIRECTV for sure. But to me, it is about having my tv picture controls sets to maximize the picture. I have my picture controls all set to similar settings on all 4 of my tvs. I keep my contrast and back lighting down about 75 - 85 and I keep sharpness down low. All sharpness does is amplify any artifacts you see in the background. Brightness controls about 55 . Now my color is turned down to a more natural color. I don't want to see orange people, unless I am watching a certain political figure running for office right now.:oldwink

Now my picture may be more soft than some might have with cable/Directv ,but I don't like seeing noise in my picture. Softness is better to me than jagged artifacts with noisy picture , which I see with both cable and Directv in their backgrounds. On the rare occasion that I see any thing not quite right in an hd picture I file a report with DISH on that channel and they usually fix it. But that hasn't happened to me since early the last decade, when I noticed a flaw in DISCOVERY HD channel , and yes they fixed it and sent me a DISH watch and pen set and mug with their compliments. :biggrin2

The only solution I've found to the black screens are never using the apps. Before I would always have problems with my joey and hopper 3 after watching anything using the Dish app. Now I just use my smart tv to watch netflix instead of the Hopper. It sure saves a lot of aggravation having to reboot the Hopper 3 all the time.

You must not watch american horror story on fx. Just one example.

I watch it every year and I don't see any problems in the picture. But I don't have my brightness, sharpness , contrast and back lighting and color cranked up to the max either. I think most people that complain about crappy picture aren't really looking at what they can do to limit that problem at home: picture controls.

Shouldn't have to settle for a soft picture to correct another issue. How about dish stop with the hd "lite" and then problem solved.

Problem is already 'solved'. My H3 on my 4K TV is very, and I mean VERY slightly worse than D*'s.

And yes, I watch American Horror Story every season.

As to adjusting the controls on the TV, well if you are looking for a proper picture you will end up doing that regardless of who your provider is.

What's real strange is that Hopper w/Sling receivers were seeing the opposite - we'd have video but no audio. This was happening after exiting different menu (screens), apps, etc, right ?
Yes this is still present on both my H2s.
Only started with U213 on my system.

Well until that compromise is reached with DISH ,the only other solution is to adjust your picture controls or go to DIRECTV. I have adjusted after almost 20 eyars to the softer picture with no artifacts. The one thing I noticed with DIRECTV hd picture ,when I had it a few years back , was the jagged artifacts and noisy picture in dark backgrounds on their hd picture and I had my picture controls for what I had for DISH. I had both services at the time. So I used to different inputs and adjusted them for either service to get the best pq for both services. I guess I just like DISH better for total service, receivers and yes the picture quality too.
