Hi everyone!

I'm a newbie to this forum and the world of fta.
I have a small, standard-size directv dish with an eagle dtv32+ lnb on my roof left over from the previous occupant so I thought I'd get a satellite receiver to get into fta programs. I just got a Viewsat Ultra VS2000, and I'm now baffled by the setup process and can't seem to figure out which satellites I have and how to receive any channels at all.

Is my existing dish even compatible with my new Viewsat VS2000? Or do I need to install a new dish?

And this might sound like a dumb question, but can I use my new fta receiver as a cable box? I have a cable line plugged directly into my tv and I don't know if I can get more channels by plugging the cable line into the fta receiver.

Can someone help me and talk me through this process?

Thanks

You need a bigger dish for free to air. FTA does not mean free pay-tv, contrary to some websites you may see. Sponsors here (top of pages) sell dishes and other fta items. 30" or bigger for real fta, paytv dishes are generally not big enough, even if some may be modified. Fta receivers can not be used as cable tv boxes, nor for getting "more channels" There is a lot of programming available on the fta satellites, nothing but NASA and the barker channels on the pay-tv sats. Click on The List, top of page to get an idea. FTA is a good hobby with tv you won't see elsewhere, the VS is just average for blind-scanning but is a good beginner receiver, IMO , easy to set up and blind scan with. FYI regarding hacking:

sgv2sum,

turbosat is right on the money, 30" or larger dish is required. The standard-size DIRECTV dish is undersized & your eagle dtv32+ lnb is circular and you need a linear lnb for linear FTA signals. Browse our Gold Sponsors SatelliteAV or Sadoun for all you need to get started! They both have great Bundle systems to get you started right!

Now, I would not get rid of that DIRECTV dish and that eagle dtv32! I would just use that in with your new 30' dish and FTA System! Leave the DIRECTV up stationary, repoint that boy to 119 West for NASA! NASA would be the only reason you need a circular lnb for FREE FTA KU. But you will learn all about that when you get started going good! Help is here 24/7 and it might seem like there is members up all night to get an question answered, sometimes it takes awhile for someone to get back to you.

If that happens, your not getting ignored it’s just that someone read your post and just does not know or the right person has not read it yet! You usually get an answer to any question right away but if you don’t I guaranteed you will the next day so check back often! You’re in a great place for everything satellite!

New to FTA? Great!! I was once too and remember the excitement of the hobby!

:welcome To The Satellite Guys!! :)
