New TV, problems with DVR and DVD recorder

I recently bought a new TV and hooked it up to my Dish cable box and my DVD player/recorder. Despite phone calls to both Dish and Toshiba, I am still not getting sound from my DVD player. (The picture is fine.) I am also trying to figure out how to transfer a program from my DVR to record it onto a disk on my DVD recorder. I'm guessing something is hooked up wrong...any ideas from the experts? I am a newbie so please explain in as much detail as possible.
