No Orange Bowl in HD for me tonight.

Bad news, the antenna that is shared by KGO-DT, KQED-DT, and KMTP-DT
has failed. There was a big increase in VSWR around 1:45 PM and the
external interlocks that protect the transmitters and the antenna and
transmission line shut the three stations down.

They will be down for at least the rest of today, Tuesday, as it is
raining, too dangerous to work on the tower, and one of the two tower
riggers on staff is out sick.

They will start trouble-shooting as soon as weather permits,
hopefully tomorrow. They will know more after they look at the
situation.

The best scenario is that the weather will cooperate, the 2nd rigger
will get well by tomorrow, Wednesday, they will be able to locate the
problem on Wednesday, and they will have the parts they may need to
do repairs.

This antenna had a problem about a year ago with a power divider.
While the power divider was being rebuilt they were able to build a
bypass so they could operate on half an antenna.

If the antenna problem is in the same area as last year they will
attempt to install the bypass.

However, the damage could be somewhere else and those three stations
could be down for some time.

All DTV stations will need to be off the air during the trouble-
shooting.
