No LOGO on DISH (yet)

I think there are several channels Dish needs to add to keep up with cable and Direct TV they seem to be falling behind. On the other hand more channels means more compression so I'm not sure it would be a good thing either. I guess since I'm really only a fan of college sports thats why I like ESPN U. I had never heard of LOGO until this thread.

First I am not trying to insult anyone here.
What is the point to a gay channel? Homosexuals want to be treated the same a straight people but you want to separate yourself from straight people by have your own channel.
I am not gay but I thought being gay was a sexual preference and not an entertainment preference. I could see if this was a porn channel or a news channel that gave info on your cause. But this just seems to be a channel that wants to force the views of homosexuallity on people. The more mainstream it is the more acceptable it is.
Yes, I know I can block this channel but that isn't the point. Why advertise it as a gay channel? What is going to make it a gay channel? If I watch this channel does it make me gay?
Point is the more you make us different the more different we are. If you want to be treated the same quit making such a big deal that you are gay.

Well, from my perspective, it's kinda turn into it's own subculture. Just like blacks have their own cultural identity, and just as latinos have their own cultural identity, Homosexuals have created their niche as a subculture, like it or not.

If you look back at the way gay people have been trying to gain acceptance in modern society, they have taken almost every move out of the playbook of the blacks in the 60's. Now that they have political freedom from oppression in many ways, they're gaining public opinion in the same fashion... through television.

So how long until there's gay music? you laugh now but I'll say in another 10 years they'll have their own music style.

I suspect a lot of folks will think that gays wanted/asked for/ a gay channel. But my guess is that some bean counter somewhere figured he could get advertizers to buy time if they thought they were reaching some 'new' audience.

I'm gay and but would probably be as unlikely as Spatch to watch LOGO.

From my view point, most of u guys and gals are looking at this from the wrong view point(s). Let's try looking at it from these directions for a sec:

1)When 2 gay people are caught kissing or holding hands they are considered gross to straight people. The same with gay people. They don't prefer to watch straight people make out. This channel gives them an opportunity to watch gays/lesbians make out in a mature enviroment.

2)When was the last time that the GLAAD awards was broadcasted on tv?
3)How many gay/lesbian themed movies actually air on premium tv on a regular basis?
4)How many gay/lesbian documentaries dealing with relationships/drugs/housing/sex have aired on tv in the past year(s)?

As you can see stations that don't advertise themselves as "straight" channels are most likely straight due to the lack of gay/lesbian themed content. There is nothing wrong with "straight" channels as there is nothing wrong with "gay" channels. Just as long as there is a good mix of both of them.

You know I don't really give a sh** about any of this. If enough people want the channel (talking to you E* ) then put it up there. If I don't want it to be watched then I will lock it out. I already have a few stations that are locked out.

Obviously people want to watch characters and situations they can relate to. Since homosexuials have very limited oppertunities to see gay people dealing witht he very real issues they deal with daily on TV.

I can't for the life of me figure out how you can say that this channel is trying to force any view on anyone. Unless your current view is that no one should be able to watch shows that you are not interested, how is you view ging to be affected at all? How is anything being forced on you? Do all the religious channels force you to be religious? Do the shopping channels make you feel like you just have to own more figurines? Did The Sopranos make you approve of murder?

Your final point that homosexuals would be treated just like everyone else if they hid their sexual orientation is offensive, in my opinion. That is the sort of thing minorities hear all the time, it is an issue they deal with on a daily basis, and is one of the things that minorities want to see characters dealing with on TV.

If every show on TV dealt with billionaires who never worked, wouldn't you be hungry for a show that dealt with people you could better relate to?

I don't think it is even about "making out". Homosexuality is not just about sex anymore than heterosexuality is. It is about relationships. Couples and singles deal with issues that surround these relationships, and those issues that homosexuals deal with more are just not dealt with much on current channels.

We should consider where BET, and other minority media outlets came from, and why. It would be nice if there never had been a time when black people were not represented on TV. But that is not reality. BET was created because blacks, and the issues of what it is like to be black in our society, were almost completely absent from TV.

Of course, today BET is mostly just a source of hip-hop videos.

Main Entry: homosexual
Function: adjective
1 : of, relating to, or characterized by a tendency to direct sexual desire toward another of the same sex
2 : of, relating to, or involving sexual intercourse between persons of the same sex.

Main Entry: heterosexual
Function: adjective
1 a : of, relating to, or characterized by a tendency to direct sexual desire toward the opposite sex b : of, relating to, or involving sexual intercourse between individuals of opposite sex
2 : of or relating to different sexes

Looks like they're both about sex to me...

alright bad use of words, maybe I should've said PDA instead of making out. But in today's society even kissing someone is considered making out nowadays.

We are talking about people, not semantics. Homosexuality does not just affect what genital goes where. It affects and defines relationships. Homosexuals deal with bigotry that heterosexuals do not. A show featureing a homosexual character is not going to be the same as one with a straight character except just with a love interest who has a different set of plumbing. Straight people are not under pressure to hide their love interests because of that plumbing.

I think it is rather obvious why minority groups, especially those that face daily bigotry, want to be able to watch shows that they can relate to. Majority groups in general are utterly clueless as to what it is like to live like that.

Yeah. I am just saying it goes beyond PDAs. Simply mentioning you have plans with your same sex partner can lead some to tell you to stop pushing homosexuality on them. A couple people I work with are homosexual, and they are very careful who they mention their outside lives to, and this is in a very liberal university environment. I can certainly understand why they might want to see other people dealing with that on their TV.

Yes the religious channels are trying to force you to be religious.

The shopping channels are trying to make you feel like you just have to own more figurines.

That was not my point. I am not saying that anyone is trying to force me to be Gay. Just that Homosexuals want to be equal but seperate themselves at the same time.
If a channel pronounced itself as a straight channel it would be called out as a hate channel by some gay group because it didn't include the homosexual crowd. The same as if a channel called itself the W.A.S.P. channel just imagine the outrage that would be caused then. Imagine if a channel went out of its way to not have any black actors. But, we can have channels that will only carry gay themed shows. If you want homosexuality to be accepted don't further seperate yourselves. Show the world that you are normal people who have to deal with the world like everyone else.

I never wrote that homosexuals should hide their sexual orientation. But, should it be worn on their shirt as a badge of honor? I don't go around saying to everyone I meet saying I like girls. So why should I even know that Tim likes Bill or Jane likes Janet. That is what I have a problem with. Who cares? Live your life, live with Bill or Janet but don't make such a big fuss over it.
Should it really be a different lifestyle? No. If I lived next to Tim and Bill what would be the difference from living next to Tim and Janet. Hopefully nothing because the only difference should be is that one couple is a man and a woman and the other is a man and a man.

Spatch,
though I understand what you are trying to say, in the country that we live in we are not allowed to just be "just like everyone else". At this point, the way George and some in Congress want to write into the constitution, I will always be single, so I will automatically have to pay higher taxes than you, I will not have over 1,000 rights and privileges that you enjoy as an American because of "what" you are and "what" I am. Do we want "special" rights? Hell no, just the opportunity to have the same rights as every other American enjoys no more, no less. But unfortunately right now, and as some see it, it always has, still is, and if some have there way, always will be this way and will never change. It's easy to sit there and say, "just be like everyone else, just don't rock the boat." but by doing things your way, we will always be considered second class citizens. My challenge to you is to go to Congress, go to George Bush, go to your state legislators, to your boss and tell them to treat us the same, tell all of them to make sure that we have the SAME rights as your do, the same privileges as you do, the chance to be just like you. And then maybe we just might. But until I can marry my partner of 13 years, until I have to right to visit him in the hospital just like you would your wife and make decisions if he weren't able to, until I can pay the same taxes as you because I am married, until I have to right to decide where and how my partner can have a funeral and be buried if something were to happen, then I think I have a right to stand up, to march, to tell the our country, our states, our cities about what I am and why I am proud to be what I am. And if that means having a channel that stands up for me and my people, then bring it on. Maybe someday it won't matter, but today it does. And I hope and pray that someday you are right, it won't matter.

It is not that homosexuals want to seperate. It is that they are made to be seperate by society. See, you are saying that homosexuals should not have channels that deal with homosexuals and the issues they live with. Instead, they should just use the same stations that everyone else uses. But that is the problem. Those stations do not cover homosexuals and their issues, just as they used to ignore non-whites. If society did not ostricize homosexuals, they would not have to create special places where they could bring themselves up to equality.

Spatch said:

You ahve to understand this in the context of reality. In reality, just about every station IS a straight station. There is a HUGE difference between a minority group forming an institution that mimics what the majority has and a majority group using their power to excude minorities.

Why is there a Congressional Black Caucus , but not a Congressional White Caucus? Because white's have traditionally held all the power. Black representitives are not trying to exculde whites. They are trying to bring more representation to an under represented group. A white caucus would simply be trying to keep minorities from having any say in government.

That is the thing. Straight people CAN talk freely about their husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, lovers, love interests, and so on. No one ever complains that the guy with the playboy mudflaps is shoving heterosexuality down their throats. Same for the woman who wears the "I love cowboys" t-shirt. But if a gay man even mentions he is going to the movies with his boyfriend, we get the sort of objections you have posted (even if that is not the sort of situation you were talking about, and you would not object to that).

And, of course, there is a reaction to a society who keeps telling homosexuals they are evil. When ever that happens to a group, a certain percentage of them are going to say "F*&% you. I'm gay and I'm not going to hide it."

In an ideal world, we would not have homosexual media, a Congressional Black Caucus, an Asian American Student Club, and so on. But we don't live in that world. Equality has only come through activism and activity, including things like getting representation on TV.

Will I watch Logo if it becomes part of the package I subscribe to? If he shows are any good, I guess. I don't watch most channels, and Logo might just be another Lifetime for me.

Speaking of which, where are the complaints about Lifetime, Oxygen, and Spike? If men or women want to be equal, why do they have those channels? Why are they always forcing us to accept them by dressing in ways where we can actually tell which sex they are? Why should I even know that Tim is Tim, and not Mr. or Ms. X?

They are straight station by nature because that is what sells. On just about every channel nowaday you are seeing
Homosexuals. Maybe it is a gay friend on a sit-com or a gay couple fixing up their room on a home improvement show or Will and Grace. Let it evolve naturally.
Your sexual orientation does not make you a minority. seperating yourself from straight people is what makes you a minority.

Why isn't there a Congressional White Caucus. I think there should be. White staight males are a minority in this country. There is no reason for a Congressional Black Caucus in theses days. Maybe we should inforce laws that treat minoritys different. Then we wouldn't need to have such a group.

Yes they can talk freely about it. So can gays. I know people I work with that don't want to here what I did with my family this past weekend. So I don't tell them. Same should go with a gay person. If someone isn't interested don't talk to them about it. Plus work isn't the place to talk about personal things it is a place to get your job done.
I have seen woman wearing t-shirts that say things like "slut" or "porn star" and have people making fun of them as they walk by. The same could happen if I guys wears a shirt that says "I love Cowboys". Get over it. If you choose to wear something like that you are doing it to get a reaction.

I have heard the arguement that it isn't natural. If you belive in God and the teachings of religion it is considered a sin in most religions.
If you don't belive in God and believe in nature and evolution you would see that other animals are not homosexual. With the exception of some animals who may rape their own gender.
You should be happy that it is accepted as much as it is.

As far as I know none of those channels call themselves straight channels. Spike Tv is Tv for men, Gay or Straight . Hell, Spike Tv carries Star Trek TNG and I remember an episode in which they went to a planet of Homosexuals and spoke on issues of hate. Can't a gay person watch any of these channels.

Ahh, the perpetual cry of the majority. You DESERVE to have the rights you have, but if anyone else gets them, they are spcieal rights.

SO making money is a good reason to have 600 stations that are almost exclusively straight, but it is not ok to make money having even one station that is mostly about gay people? You know, white people used to refuse to watch shows about black people too. I guess you objected to the few shows that actually ahd black people as a target audience?

Spatch said:

No, it is the double standards and hypocricy from people like you that seperates people from society and makes them second class citizens. Look how you use completely different logic for a station that is mostly about gay people than you do for stations that are entirely about straight people.

Social minority status is not just about numbers. It is about power. Straight white males make up, what, about 35 percent of the US population? Guess what percentage of US Presidents have been straight white males? 100% Guess what percentage of the people in Congress are straight white males? More than 70%. More than 90% of CEOs are straight white males. Or, the poor straight white male. Somone better do something quick, or they might only have 500 time the power of a black lesbian.

Do you know how many Senators there are in this country? 100. Do you know what percentage of the US is black? Around 15% Guess how many Senators are black. GO on. Guess. Wrong. lower. Guess again. Nope. I'll just tell you. One. Barrak Obama is the only black person in the Senate. That's right. Blacks are under-represented by some 1400%. Of the 1232 people who have served in the Senate, four, FOUR, have been African American. There is ONE more black Senator "these days" there there were in the least open minded days in our history.

Here is a look at the minorities in the 109th Congress.
http://www.factmonster.com/ipka/A0878575.html

Let me guess. Voting for a second black Senator would be granting them "special rights".

Can you keep a picture of your family on your desk without being harrassed about being straight? Can you mention your spoouces name without people criticizing you for your sexual orientation? I know I can. I have never once been bothered by people who did not approve of my family. Not once have I been accused of forcing my sexual orientation on another person. But ever gay person I know has that problem all the time. We are not talking about cornering people and making them listen to our life stories. We are talking about "Hey Bill, what's up?" "Not much. Saw War of the Worlds with my boyfriend last night". And if you claim you don't say things that relate to your sexual orientation all the time, you are lying.

NOtice how you changed the situation? You don't compare a man and a woman wearing an "I love Cowboys" shirt. You compare a man waring an "I Love Cowboys" shirt to a woman wearing a "Porn Star" shirt. You actuall y equate being gay with being a slut, and think it is ok if other people use your thinking as an excuse to harrass people.

I've heard people say that blacks should "go back to Africa". I've heard people say that Jews are secretely running the US and UN. Are these the people you want on your side?

And there is your double standard again. You say it is wrong to have a channel that mainly targets one group of people......when those people are homosexual. But you have no complaints about TV that mainly targets men. You have no complaints about TV that mainly targets women. I have no heard you complain about TV that mainly targets Christians, African Americans, children, teenagers, heterosexuals, or any other group.

If someone wants to start a TV station, can support it, and has viewers, why should you care? In fact, why DON'T you care about the 99.9+% of stations that do this?
