GREAT CHINA CIRCUS

This two-part documentary series explores the centuries-old tradition of recruiting and training China’s most skilled acrobats and – for the first time ever – reveals this story to the outside world. The documentary crew was granted unprecedented access to the Wuqiao School of Acrobatic Arts, the most prestigious training school in China’s Hebei Province. Filmed during one year, the documentary reveals what it takes to make it to the top of the Chinese circus world and what life is like for those who achieve this success. It also features several acrobats at different stages in their careers and witnesses the stress, competition and joy involved in being a world-class performer.

US Premiere - Episode 1: “Elites” TV-G
Premieres Wednesday, November 7th at 10pm ET & PT/9C

Every year, hundreds of children are brought to the influential Wuqiao School of Acrobatic Arts in hopes of a brighter future. In this premiere episode, viewers follow a group of promising seven-year-olds as they undergo the initial test to gain entry to the school and conquer their first acts. As they perfect each skill, they build a foundation for careers that will be decided by the end of the six-year training program. The stories of older students who are priming themselves for the culmination of their training are also featured. Students who are successful stand a chance of being recruited by China’s top acrobatic troupes, including the elite Wuqiao Acrobatic Troupe. Those who are not will be asked to leave. In an average year, 15 percent of the class goes home for Chinese New Year...and doesn’t return.

US Premiere - Episode 2: “On Ice” TV-G
Premieres Wednesday, November 14th at 10pm ET & PT/9C

After they gain entry to the Wuqiao School of Acrobatic Arts, new recruits are expected to ratchet up their skills to meet the demanding standards of this elite troupe. That means extra long hours, the aches and growing pains of adjusting to life within the troupe, as well as life on the road, since they will spend an average of eight months per year touring. While at school, the troupe prepares for the Wuqiao International Circus Festival, where it will go head-to-head with one of the most powerful acrobatic forces in China, The People's Liberation Army Soldiers Acrobatic Troupe. The teams compete for a place in the Chinese New Year variety show, which can open the door to international stardom. As the performers from each team look on, they learn if their dreams will soar to new heights or tumble to the ground.

shacks to find the most delicious regional foods in Asia. He talks with local chefs and hawkers, travels to indigenous markets to seek out rare ingredients, and then couples his experiences with his keen sense of taste and creative cooking to craft an exquisite meal at his restaurant in Sydney.

World Premiere - Episode 1: “Singapore” TV-G

In the series’ debut, Chef Mangan heads to cosmopolitan Singapore to discover the city’s fiery obsession with chili, from street food to Singapore’s national dish Hainanese Chicken Rice. A walk through a historical neighborhood leads him to uncover the secret behind laksa (a spicy coconut broth) and a dinner with a local family gives him his first taste of chili crab. Things get a little hot under the collar for Mangan when the entire family bites down on the hottest type of chili. Can Mangan handle the heat? Back at glass, his restaurant in Sydney, Mangan creates some fresh new Singaporean dishes. Now it’s up to his guests to decide whether they are hot enough to be placed on the glass menu, or if they leave them cold.

World Premiere - Episode 3: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam TV-G
Premieres Wednesday, November 21st at 9pm ET/6pm PT/8C

It’s all about the freshness of ingredients in Vietnam, where even something like beer made first thing in the morning has to be finished by the end of the day. In this episode, Mangan gets his feet wet in a variety of ways: when he travels to a food market on water in search of the local fruit, Gac; when he discovers that traditional alfresco dining in Vietnam means eating on small plastic stools along the roadside; and when he attempts to master Ban Cuon, a minced pork and mushroom roll, at a local food market. What seems like a simple snack to make proves to be quite a challenge. Back at glass, viewers find out if the fresh new dishes inspired by Mangan’s travels whet his guests’ appetites and leave them hungry for more.

World Premiere - Episode 4: “Hong Kong” TV-G Premieres Wednesday, November 28th at 9pm ET/6pm PT/8C
In the gourmet paradise known as Hong Kong, locals eat five times a day and snack regularly between meals, so Mangan feels right at home. In true Hong Kong fashion, the chef hunts down Cantonese delights from morning till night, indulges in Braised Shark’s fin – a country delicacy – and uncovers the secret to springy wonton noodles. Together with Winnie Lau – Hong Kong’s first female executive chef – Mangan also discovers the secret to making a classic dim sum. Then it’s off to small, hot kitchens, where Mangan rolls up his sleeves and tries to manage the intense flames of Cantonese “wok chi” cooking. Can he take the heat or does he have to get out of the kitchen? Home again at his restaurant, Mangan creates Cantonese dishes for his guests, hoping to replicate the gourmet paradise he experienced in his travels.
