Given that you have been able to buy the Home and Business version for around $175 up front and it will work until you get tired of it, I say hogwash on it being a better deal.
Of course if you need Publisher and Access (two other worst-of-breed titles) it may prove out.
I think the LibreOffice camel has found its way into the tent and Microsoft is scrambling to hold together the one of the two ships that is still seaworthy in terms of hauling revenue (the other being server software).

Open Office works just fine for me. I've been using it for small business and home use for about 8 years.
