northwest suburbs of Chicago
I live approximately 45 miles from the transmitter sites in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Will I need an outdoor antenna? Also, any recommendations on antennas that will get good reception from that distance?

zip code please. Wanna take a look at your conditions. At 45 miles you will definately need an out door antenna.

wbbm cbs transmits digital at low power on ch3...eventually going to ch 11. you will need a vhf/uhf antenna there are afew digitals in chicago transmitting on vhf. It will need to be long to receive ch 3 unfortunately and ch 2 analog for that matter.

minimum ...winegard hd7084p with a preamp 131" long or hd8200p with amp 177" long. not sure on preamp yet till I take a look of what you have around you. Most likely a channel master cm7777 or winegard ap8275.

If big antennas do not turn you on...digital cable or satellite.

antenna web lists you as mostly purple. That translates to big long antenna outside. see my avatar...thats a hd8200p.

winegard hd 7084p minimum or Hd8200p with cm7777 or ap8275 amp and rotor to fine tune direction to receive vhf/uhf or cm4228 with amp for uhf only..

The chicago market is tough,

I haveD* HD with locals, however, D* doesn't have WGN, PBS, and some other locals in HD. I would like to have the WGN for Cubs and Bulls games. Do I still need the large antenna in order to receive those channels?

The stations are violet at your location...uhf only cm4228 with a cm 7777 preamp mounted very high outside. But antenna web only lists the channels below as able to be received. So it is a risk you take and you will find out after you install if you will receive the others or not. The cm4228 is one of the best uhf antennas in the market place. You will not receive wbbm with the cm 4228 since it transmits on vhf ch 3.

Antenna science is touch and go so who knows. You will not know till you try.

violet - vhf WBBM-DT 2.1 CBS CHICAGO IL 119° 42.6 3
violet - uhf WFLD-DT 32.1 FOX CHICAGO IL 121° 42.7 31
violet - uhf WGN-DT 9.1 WB CHICAGO IL 121° 42.7 19
violet - uhf WMAQ-DT 5.1 NBC CHICAGO IL 121° 42.7 29
violet - uhf WPWR-DT 50.1 UPN GARY IN 121° 42.6 51

I am at 70 miles north of Chicago, use 4228 with Titan 7777 in the attic, receive all major Chicago OTA HD. Fox, Upn, NBC are on 100% of the time, WGN - 75%, ABC - 50%, have some others but never watch them.

Sounds like Milwaukee most likely.

but 70 miles in the attic ???...come on.

You must have some kinda attic or I live in a signal hole.

I'm located(46360) about 40 Miles across Lake Michigan from Chicago, and use a 4228 Antenna with a CM 7777 Pre-amp.And get all but WBBM , but if I want to see programming on CBS,I just turn my house around and get it( WSBT-DT...CBS) out of South Bend,In.

If you want to receive WGN you'll have to go with a big antenna because channel 2/3 antennas are inherently BIG. The half wave length for channel 2/3 is somewhere around 110 inches, thats the width of the dipole needed, add reflectors and directors and you're looking at a pretty large setup. As was mentioned, WGN is scheduled to move to channel 11 in 2009, but that is of little help today.

Try a fringe or deep fringe UHF/VHF antenna (purple) like a Channel Master 3678 or 3679, a Winegard 7084P, or a Wade-Delhi VU-935SR.

If you want to go the economical way, go to your nearest Lowe's Hardware and get their biggest UHF/VHF antenna (probably a CM 3018, 3019 or 3020).

Looks like I was the one that was confused, but from here TV stations beginning with "W" all look the same. ;^)
