Wal Mart has the 3 gig WD My Book Essentials for $135 (EHDD) I almost got one but they aren't compatible with Dish or my Popcorn hour, I pulled the one I got a few months ago out of it's case and put in my pc as an extra drive...
After much reading, I went with an OCZ Vertex 4 256Gb drive as it seemed to have the fastest I/O latency right now. A bit more money but I need performance in my application.
I still can't find a 1TB My Book AV DVR Expander for my Tivo Premiere in stock at the usual places (Newegg, TigerDirect, etc.) or for less than $319.68 at Amazon.

Does anyone recall the pre-flood pricing on 4TB drives? I'm trying to determine how much more room they have to come down in price.
They are the highest density and therefore the cost / GB will not be the best. That's a toss up between 2 and 3 TB at the moment.

Cheap 2 Tb drives are not the whole story. Many of these really cheap drives are poor speed performers so be careful. If you need simple data storage they work fine but if you require HD video serving they will perform poorly. The 7200 RPM and a decent buffer will cost a bit more but everything is down in price now and SSD's are dropping fast too. Most SSD's I price now are nearly half what they sold for 6 months ago. Glad I waited!

Personally holding out on SSDs until my next upgrade, so whenever Windows 8 hits.
